This game against the bottom side, played in wet and greasy conditions on an unfamiliar ground and with a full bench of six players was never going to be easy. Our aim was to kick 6 goals a quarter which would require a very disciplined effort from all the team. However the boys approached the game in the correct manner, following instructions and moving the ball quickly at every opportunity. Our first quarter was excellent with Jamie, Fraser and David dominating the centre bounces and driving the ball forward to an open forward line where our tall forwards Reuben and Jordan were able to score at will. We were just as dominant in the second quarter however we tended to all drift into the forward line chasing kicks and as a consequence we found it difficult to kick goals. Nick Edwards did a fine job amongst all the traffic scoring 2 good goals.
In an effort to give all players a decent go, we made many positional changes in the second half which saw players in unfamiliar positions. This did not harm our efforts at all as everyone responded to their new roles. Troy, Grovesy, Daniel and Alex all moved from the backline and showed that they were also good goalkickers. Fraser had the ball on a string and picked up heaps of possessions with hard running and a fierce attack on the ball. His tackling was also inspirational and caused numerous turnovers. Our smaller players, Luke, Nick (Lovett), Tom Thorn, Tom Neuendorf, Marc, Darcy, and Matt Yeo won possessions all over the field and used the ball very constructively. Alan Johns in his first game with Blackburn also showed he will be a good acquisition.
Today was not the ideal preparation for next week's game against top side Glen Waverley Rovers, however we managed to maintain a high standard of play against a weak but determined opposition. Next week gives us a chance to prove to ourselves, our parents and our supporters that we are good enough to mix it against top opposition and play finals footy.
