While it was a tough year for the Gargoyles on the pitch, the season still provided us with some outstanding accomplishments and performances.
We were able to bring in a number of rookies who played a full season, not to mention some players who only got a little taste but showed interest in returning for a second year. We also witnessed the continued development of key Canadians in their early years of footy, especially Jeremy and Tyler Schwartzentruber, Brian "Ned Kelly" Correira, Derek Govier, and Brandon Skinner.
Two of our members also earned the honour of making the All-Ontario team in 2017. Jacob Martin made the team as a Full-Back Pocket, and Sam Wood made it as a coach.
Jacob Martin also represented Canada at the 2017 International Cup: a competition in Melbourne held every three years for countries to compete in. This was the second time Jacob has played in an IC, and this year had the honour of being captain in Canada's final three games. Canada finished with a 1-3 record before beating Fiji in the 7th place game in the top division.
In the Round 12 game against the Etobicoke Roos, our players, friends and alumni came out in force to make it our most successful game of the season. It was the best turnout for our current players, and with the help of some former Gargoyles we were able to field a full lineup and get a solid win to finish off the season.
Finally, the Gargoyles awards night is this Saturday, September 30th at Ernie's Roadhouse. The ceremony starts at 7:00, and the party will continue through the night with Firetrain playing live starting at 9:00.
