As the 2015 season is approaching at a rate of knots; we begin our season lead up series with mens new recruit Nick Liang!
Nick, And how did you first come to hear about the club?
I heard about Hamilton Wildcats from long-time player Nick DiRago, I had previously worked with his wife who had introduced us several years ago.
What do you think the most daunting part of first coming out to play/train for the sport of Aussie Rules?
I believe its nerve racking for any athlete to come out to a new sport they have maybe only seen on TV once or twice, learning new skills and meeting new people, it felt like the first day of school, But everyone on the team was incredibly warm and welcoming, helpful in learning the skills and more the willing to share a pint after the first session.
And what do you find still to be the most difficult aspect of the game? And the most enjoyable so far?
The most difficult aspect is definitely learning how to read the game and proper movement off the ball, I previously played collegiate level soccer, I already had a knack for kicking the ball which has helped me transition into the game easier.
Most enjoyable is definitely the social aspect of the team, practices are always fun and keep players fit. Its a perfect mix of intensity and fun. Team social event like pubcrawl and other nights out keep the mood light hearted and enjoyable for all. I have yet to play a game however my love for the sport as already started.
Though you haven’t played a game yet, What do you hope to achieve in this upcoming season?
I cannot wait for May 23, I hope I can be part of helping to bring the wildcats back to the glory days of previous years, hearing players talk about north wind to represent Canada. I mean a player can dream right?
Any advice for any new/potential recruits who maybe interested in becoming a Wildcat?
Come out and give it a go, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You don't have to be a soccer, football or rugby player to come out and have fun! The catters’ will always make you feel welcome.
