In a game where the unexpected was the norm, Mayne came out on top in the match that by all reasonable assessments they should have lost after a dismal first quarter. But the strange game of contrasting quarters eventually led to a Tigers win.
The first term was all Springwood as they piled on the pressure and the Tigers seemed to have no answer as the Pumas scored 30 points from 16 shots at goal – but their wasteful kicking came back to haunt them at the end.
The second quarter opened well for the Tigers kicking two goals and then it was tit for tat in an open attacking game of football – both sides scoring freely to end up with 6 goals each.
Stultifying defence from the Mayne back line (and friends) kept the Pumas from scoring a goal in the third term while at the other end they managed 3 more to close the gap on the scoreboard to six points.
And as they opened the final term with a goal it seemed that the momentum was with the Tigers and that they would go on to win comfortably. But the Pumas made them fight hard for the necessary points to take the lead only close to the end of the game. Then two uncharacteristic errors let the Pumas back in with a real chance to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat. But it was not to be and even though they had the last kick at goal for the day this landed well short and the Tigers fell over the line.

Taylor Murtha – stood up to the test at the back and was our saviour with telling marks in the final 5 minutes
Jaryd Hamilton – loves playing at Springwood and gave a polished display here again
Jimmy Gillett – he running machine came into his own as the opposition tired around him
