The Tigers won another game on Sunday that goes into the how did they do that category. It was hard fought all day and essentially the tigers tackled their opposition o a standstill and came away 6 point winners.
At the start of the game this trench warfare was not evident – the tigers got away to a good and fluent start and kicked 5 goals to their opponent’s one to establish a handy lead. This had the Tigers supporters wondering just how large the margin would be.
But from there on in it was a tough grinding affair that saw the Tigers dig into their reserves of tackling strength to withstand everything that Burleigh could throw at them.
A sixth goal and two points in the second term was almost the end of the scoring for Mayne. While the Bombers tried everyway but putting on after burners to break through and score the crucial goals that they needed. But they were pressured and tackled and harried out of clear scoring opportunities and the Tigers withstood it all to emerge winners by the one goal margin.
This was tough and required the greatest amount of concentration as any small mistake could’ve cost the game. The Tigers shone through and the win was theirs’.
Again there were 22 good players that were led magnificently by Andrew Housego who at times in the game seemed to be everywhere. He was well supported by Jake Magill and Daniel Weller in particular, with Jason Maggs and Hugh Valentine performing their run with roles well all day. Tom Falconer and Baden Crathern were also good all day. And the tackle count was an all time high with some great smothering and chasing down as well.
Mayne Tigers 5-3 6-5 6-6 6-6 42
Burleigh 1-2 3-5 4-8 4-12 36
Best players A Housego, J Magill, T Falconer, B Crathern, D Weller, H Valentine and J Maggs
