Clubs wear their original colours and jerseys style for the rivalry round – Mayne and Wilston-Grange did not need to change their strip as they both are still in the original styles and colours. But playing under lights is difficult for the visitors at Hickey Park and it proved to be so for Mayne Tigers last Friday.
The game slipped away courtesy of ill-discipline or umpiring decisions. Five 50m penalties cost 4 goals and the loss of momentum and gave the Gorillas goals at critical times of the game.
The winning game plan was not as well sustained this week due to too many dropped marks and non-effective hand balls from the Tigers. There was also the added pressure of when the ball was on the ground the Tigers weren’t able to clear it successfully.
What was good was that the endeavor and effort did not slacken and at the end of 3 quarters Mayne was clear and heading for goal only for the siren to intervene.
Best for the night were Andrew Housego, playing another great Captain’s role, with Corey Massingham putting together two great games in a row. They were well supported at the back by Caleb Brown, who is running into form, Matty Evans, tireless in and around the ball, Daniel Weller, with a big effort in defence and Jimmy Gillett, who continues to run and run and run.
But it was to no avail as the Gorillas ran out 33 point winners after stacking on 5 goals to nil in the 2nd term.
Mayne 2-6 3-7 5-12 7-15 57
Gorillas 5-2 8-7 9-10 12-18 90
