In what many would call the boil-over of the season the bottom placed Mayne Tigers outplayed Palmbeach-Currumbin who were sitting at the top of the table undefeated for the year. But rather this can be seen as the rewards for a week of hard work and the team being disciplined to stick to a well-thought out game plan.
On the small but wide ground getting numbers behind the ball and sweeping it up to the two tall front men with waves of Tigers was executed well all day. And PBC were never able to come to terms with the way that that Tigers played the game; good tackling, numbers at the break down and then swift movement out of defence to the forward 50m. This was also combined with aggressive, smothering defence that kept driving the PBC attack out onto the flanks and away from the central corridor.
In the first quarter the Tigers kept pace with PBC with good defence and straight kicking for goal. The second was an evenly contested quarter where the Tigers again made the most of their entries into the forward 50m. To go into half-time with only a 6 point deficit gave the whole team and their supporters great heart for the second half.
And this was shown as the Tigers gradually took the lead with their best football fro the year at both ends of the ground and the good execution of the game plan. In the terrific last term, the Tigers had to withstand a determined PBC who chipped away at the 10 point lead to go ahead by 6 points well into the term. But the Tigers fought back well and with good goals leveled the score and then close to he final siren kicked the winning goal.
There were 22 best players on the day but Luke Ferguson and Brad Johns the twin spearheads had great games, while in the back line Corey Massingham and Caleb Brown were the rocks on which PBC foundered. The mid-field playing deep was well served by Tom Falconer and Nathan Smyth.
A great win that has given the Club fresh heart for the rest of the season, and which was PBCâs first defeat at home for 20 games.
