Hikaru Homma heads home

Thursday, 11th December, 2008

It's been a fun 12 months with young Hikaru Homma but the moment finally arrived for him to head home to Japan last week and say "sayonara" to his friends at the WheelKings.

Hikaru had a 12 month work visa and was employed at a travel agency in the Sydney CBD where he also had an apartment. But anyone would have thought his real reason for coming to Australia was just to play wheelchair basketball! A keen player in Japan, he was told about the WheelKings by former Wenty guard, and now Japanese resident, Michael Razic.

As an example of his commitment to the sport, Hikaru would load his wheelchair onto a bus twice a week and go to WheelKings training at Hunters Hill where he would train and scrimmage into the night then catch the bus back home again, often returning after midnight. He also played for the WheelKings in the Queensland Classic and Slam Down Under, and he won a championship medal in his final competition - Division One of the Sydney Wheelchair Basketball League. A fitting farewell to a fine fellow who we will all sadly miss!

Just prior to his departure last week, he wrote to his team mates:

Dear all Kings members ,

Hope I will come back to Australia again someday .

And also I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2009.
