Mayne fell just short of Grange in an entertaining match at Hickey Park on Friday night. With both sides keeping the scoreboard ticking over all night it was the Gorillas who held on after Mayne surged to within 9 points early in the last quarter. A number of costly errors throughout the night by the Tigers in defence and attack ultimately proved the difference.
Luke dominated his more fancied opponents in the ruck with some elegant tap work at the centre bounce and creative play around the ground – finishing with 5 goals. Andrew marked everything that came his way and racked up over 25 touches at centre half forward and first gamer Nathan Smythe stepped up brilliantly to completely shut down his big name opponent.
The first quarter was played at a frenetic pace with our boys managing to ignore some undisciplined acts by Wilston and focus on getting their hands on the ball first. Young Corbin in particular showed terrific courage at the contest and gave us plenty of drive. The Wilston forwards were proving hard to stop though and an 8 goal to 4 second quarter by Grange ensured they took a 4 goal lead into the main break. After spending the first half blanketing his opponent in defence Browny was moved into the midfield and combined well with Luke, Keno and Trent to get Mayne within 12 points at the last change. Unfortunately the lads couldn’t keep the momentum going kicking 3 points in a row to start the last and when we turned the ball over twice in a row in defence resulting in easy goals to Wilston, the margin had blown out to 4 goals where it remained for the rest of the contest.
As has been the case each week this year we played some good footy for most of the game but still are making some silly mistakes that are costing us dearly.
The boys will now enjoy the 8 day break before our next game at home against Surfers Paradise on Saturday 2pm.
