The boys will enjoy the weekend off footy with no games this week as part of the split round. We play Wilston Grange on Friday night next week in what will be a hotly contested affair with both teams looking to go 3 -3.
Last weekend the Tigers were off the boil across the park in a game of swinging momentum. Sandgate had control of the contest from late in the first quarter through to halftime with greater intensity, dominance in the hit outs and their ability to capitalise on our skill errors. The 3rd quarter however, was all one way traffic with Mayne kicking 6-4 to nil, but a late goal with seconds on the clock to Sandgate swung the momentum back to the home side. Two early goals by the Seahawks kept them in front and late in the final quarter the Mayne coaching staff took the opportunity to give the younger players the chance to finish the game, with the result beyond doubt. To Sandgate’s credit they did not take the foot off the pedal and pushed hard to kick 5 late goals to blow the margin out. It was their ability all game to clear the ball cleanly from the contest that enabled them plenty of ball into their forward 50m.
Aside from Brownie – who dominated his contest with Sandgate’s high profile recruit in Dan Dickfos – the rest of the side were far too inconsistent in their endeavours. What we can take out of the game was that with so many players down on form we still were in the contest until late in the game. We need to focus this week on putting together a 4 quarter performance and tidying up our skill.
Unfortunately we will have to overcome the loss of big man Glen Housego for the remainder of the season, as he will undergo surgery on his knee in the coming weeks, after injuring it in an innocuous incident up at Maroochydore. It is a bitter blow for Glen who was coming off a career best finish in the best and fairest last year – finishing second to his brother Andrew, and has started well in 2008. We wish Glen all the best in his recovery and hope to see him (and Bron, Jack and Noah) down at the game in the coming weeks.
The 5th annual $1000 draw was held on Saturday with a fantastic crowd in attendance to see coach Mitch (represented by his good wife Tamara) and reserve grade captain Bobby the last two men standing with one number to be drawn. A gentleman’s agreement ensured that no one lost and enabled Mitch to collect for the 3rd time which has to be something of a record and naturally proved very popular with the punters. Many thanks to Steiny, Tom F and Sneezey who provided great entertainment all night even if they weren’t trying! And to the lovely ladies who assisted MC Mitch up on stage – you were simply magnificent!
