The first game of the season was a cracker against the Yeronga Devils at Leyshon Park.
The Tigers were challenged by pre-season injuries and school holidays but received tremendous support from the under 16’s who provided six players.
We got off to a great start taking a three goal lead into the first break with some strong centre clearances and direct footy. The second quarter into the wind and we retained our three goal lead into the main change but our much smaller and younger side was certainly feeling the pressure. The third quarter was marred by the injury to our ruckman Sam Ditchburn with a bad ankle injury and some less direct footy and inaccurate kicking. The
Devils were starting to gain some confidence and we knew a challenge was coming in the last quarter. Whilst Yeronga kicked five goals to our one, we held on grimly fighting to the last. A steadying goal from Sam Gardner ensured victory and a great win against substantial odds. The last quarter was also spoiled by a fractured arm to Mitchell Smith just minutes before the end leaving us without a bench.
The backline must be credited as a group for their solid and reliable defence against bigger and stronger opposition. Powelly was a rock at the last line while Dan Evans and Buckets provided regular springboard attack. Steve gave his usual powerful performance while Scott and Jaxon were both great when they were on the field. Our other under 16, Todd was tremendous up the field scoring 2 valuable goals.
We were well serviced by our on ballers and they will only get better as match fitness takes hold. Our forwards will also benefit from more direct attack as we have some of the best marking players in the league.
Best Players: Keiran, Buckets, Taylor, Dan Evans, Sam G.
Score: Mayne 10.13.73 d Yeronga 10.9.69 Sam G 4,
