Practice matches, training runs, drills…. You can do as many as you like as often as you like, as hard as you like but like living with someone until you get married…you never know how you’ll hold up to the pressure until it’s the real thing.
Today the Banyule Colts took to the ground for their very first real game as a team…and just like that nervous groom, they threw everything they could at being the best they could and left with the prize.
Before the game Tony said that games are won and lost from the back line, and our backline listened and took on the task. Clearing the ball time after time after time to give our forwards something to work with and convert into a result.
With the change in playing style, personnel and coaching staff, there was fair bit of uncertainty prior to the game, but things seemed to gel on the field which was a credit to all concerned.
The boys repeatedly took on last years grand final winners with ferocious tackling, relentless follow up and consistent chasing and refusing to crack when the challenges inevitably came.
That said, at times Tony and Scotty were frustrated by sloppy ball use and the in-ability to score from inside the 50, which is something we need to take on board and get better at, because other teams may not let us get away with it.
Well done to Lachlan Turner who broke his thumb but stayed to watch the game and sing the song with his team mates. Not all guts and determination has to happen on the field. And well done to Megan and Phil who responed with speed and calming and skill.
So congratulations on the win, enjoy the joy that comes with it and lets take on next week as it comes.
