It’s been said more than once but a week is a long time in footy. Last week, we were disappointing but we earned the double chance for a reason.
Throughout the season, we have emphasised the need to start well and on Sunday our first quarter was fantastic giving us a four goal lead at quarter time. With seven changes at quarter time, the challenge was on to maintain the momentum in the 2nd quarter.
As expected Kew Rovers fought back hard but our group matched them and we took a five goal lead into the main break. After half time, it was an arm wrestle with Kew threatening throughout, getting the lead within three goals at times but every player on the field was fantastic in playing their role and creating contests. A couple of late goals to us provided a 32 point win which doesn’t reflect the quality of the contest between the two sides.
Special mentions, I’ve got a few- firstly Tom, Biggsy and Oliver who all took on “run with” roles against Kew’s best midfields and in my humble opinion came out on top across the four quarters. Joel played the perfect captains role, inspirational, clever and brave. Darcy’s ruck work showed how he has become a leader in this group. Nelson provided exactly what was asked of him, strong in and under at the contest and then using his kicking skills to set up opportunities. Josh C was an absolute rock across half back with his marking and presence. And have I mentioned Calvin and Holden?? Challenged to use their time on the ground to have an influence on the contest. they met the challenge and then some. Apologies to a number of players who also deserve mentions for their efforts.
This week is a wonderful opportunity for the boys to play in a grand final. We know that our best is good enough to be more than competitive against a side who deserves to be favourite. Hopefully everyone is looking forward to a memorable day. Go Bears!
