As predicted, without the social pressure of Team Photos, the U10’s returned to their normal scruffiness as we prepared for our Rnd 9 tussle vs Fitzroy. A late change of venue caused some logistical challenges, however once we were all on deck the boys were switched on and ready to go.
As has been the trend lately, we jumped out of the blocks and had most of the early possession. This time however, we received some rewards for our efforts as we kicked a couple of nice goals through great teamwork and quick movement of the ball from the centre. Our Captain for the day, Mitch Cargin, lead the way with some hard running and impressive shepherds. This became infectious throughout the team and soon everyone was looking for an opportunity to clear a path for their team mates. Particularly Noah, Mitch T and Matthew W.
Our forward line was functioning beautifully, with Zach, Sam and Riley working hard for their possessions. This hard work translated into an avalanche of goals (well 8 ) which gave us a match winning lead over a quality opponent. Or so we thought…..
Fitzroy had one last effort left in them, and had most of the play in the final quarter. However some excellent efforts by Tom H, Zach and Charlie when they were clearly outnumbered, ensured that we held on for an impressive victory.
Despite our dominance in the midfield and up forward for most of the game, the most impressive aspect of this game was that every defender stuck to their men at all times. We also set-up our Great Wall of Banyule across the half forward line, led by Joel, to ensure that we kept the ball in our attacking half.
The boys are really starting to understand the game better now and are following instructions very well.
Zach Brown was a worthy winner of the medal this week. Putting on a clinic on how to be a focal point up forward. His ability to compete for the ball, keep his feet and kick a couple of goals was impressive to watch.
Next week we return to our home ground vs Glen Iris. Let’s make it 2 in a row…..
