Mayne went into the much anticipated clash with Palm Beach on Saturday with high expectations yet within half an hour were all but blown off the park by a powerful and sometimes belligerent Lions outfit.
On the end of a 9 goal to 1 first quarter Mayne toiled away in the second and managed to stop the bleeding to some effect and entered half time in desperate need of a spell. To that point only Shaun Daly and Dean Hartley were in any sort of form and coach Ferguson implored the team to regroup and return fire.
A fired up Tigers outfit then blasted a 7 goal to nil volley to stun the local crowd with Luke Faulkner destroying a number of opponents deep in attack. Only 15 points down now at the last change and the boys were back in with a sniff.
Further forays into attack went unrewarded in front of goal in the last term by Mayne and were punished by a resettled Lions combination. Palm Beach cruised to a deserved 30 point win on the back of a 5.1 to 2.5 finish.
With 2 games to go 5th placed Mayne meet 6th placed Grange in a local derby of epic proportions on Saturday at Everton.
