Not only did the Tigers go down to a revitalised Springwood outfit on Saturday but also lost 4 players in the process in an incredibly disappointing effort. Nevertheless, nothing can be taken away from the Pumas who were far more committed to the contest, played with energy and enthusiasm and were deserved victors.
The alarm bells were sounding early on a bog track with the Pumas handling the wet conditions superbly whilst Mayne fumbled and went in to quarter time 3 goals down. It was much the same for the rest of the match until a late flurry in the final term gave the supporters hope but injuries to key players in Sellen, Faulkner, Stevenson and Ferguson saw the Tigers run fall short. The Tigers defence were ripped to shreds early resulting in an SOS to Patterson, Stephens and Brown who steadied the ship after half time but the damage was done. The forward line failed to find a winner all day despite steady supply from Falconer and Collings. Jordan Morrison in his first game for the Tigers showed enough to suggest he has a bright future ahead.
The 10 point loss, the 4th in a row for Mayne, spells the end for the finals aspirations of the Tigers after showing early season promise. Despite this the local derby against Wilston Grange on Saturday will be one to watch with the Gorillas traditionally bringing out the best in the Tigers.
