Werribee has defeated Queanbeyan by 85 points in the Foxtel Cup. The Werribee Tigers now advance to thje semi final against East Fremantle.
Final score Werribee 16.17. 114 d Queanbeyan 4.4.28.
The Werribee Tigers progressed to the Foxtel Cup semi-finals with ease, cruising to an 85-point against Queanbeyan at Etihad Stadium.Ben Ross and Ayden Kennedy set the tone early for the ‘home’ side with some precise passing by foot off half back opening up a 26-point lead at the first change, Ross kicking a long goal on the run off his left foot. Tim McGenniss kicked two early goals, while Ben Brown and Scott Clouston provided big targets up forward and a nuisance for the Queanbeyan defence.
However, the visitors fought back at the start of the second quarter, their tackling pressure being rewarded with a number of ‘holding the ball’ decisions.A number of turnovers across half-back did not prove costly, nor did some inaccurate kicking – with the Werribee boys kicking 4.11 throughout the second and third quarter.Mason Wood proved a presence across half forward, leading and presenting well – but he was a major culprit in front of goal, kicking five behinds.
Meanwhile, Jordan Gysberts collected 22 disposals through the middle of the ground, while Will Sierakowski produced one of his best performances in the yellow and black.Werribee’s midfielders were allowed time and space to dispose of the ball, highlighted by chains of handballs opening up space in the middle of the ground, and a number of raking, low passes hitting targets up forward.
With a seven-goal lead at the final change, and with a big game against North Ballarat on Sunday, the Tigers could have been forgiven if they went into ‘preservation mode’.But a seven-goal-to-one final term capped off a brilliant four-quarter performance, a stunning check-side goal from Sierakowski from the left forward pocket proving the icing on the cake.
With eight marks, 14 disposals and three goals, as well as offering support in the ruck to Darcy Fort, Ben Brown was the dominant big man on the ground – attracting the attention of the Fox Footy commentary team and our Twitter followers.A long goal from Addam Maric inside the centre square just minutes before the final siren meant he finished with three, while Jacob Graham was influential out of the back half and Taylor Hine also impressed.
Werribee’s win means they will now take on East Fremantle at Patersons Stadium on July 9 in the Foxtel Cup’s semi-final round.
