Walker Road Sporting Precinct

We are excited to announce that the Walker Road Sporting Precinct (next to the Edmonton PCYC) will be the future home of the Southside Comets Football Club.

The precinct is currently under construction by Cairns Regional Council with Southside Comets to move over ready for the commencement of the 2017 season. This will mean that next season (2016) will be our last season at Petersen Park.

Our new home grounds at the Walker Road Sporting Precinct will include:
• 4 fields dedicated and available to Southside Comets every night of the week during the football season;
• 2 of these fields are dedicated to Southside Comets 12 months a year;
• A large clubhouse that is dedicated to Comets during the football season and shared with Cricket in the off season for special events and Summer 6’s.

• The clubhouse includes:
- Canteen area;
- Large 86m² club/meeting room;
- 4 large change rooms with showers which caters for Home and Away Men and Home and away Women.
- Large female and male toilets;
- Female and male disabled toilets and shower;
- 2 referee change rooms with showers;
- First aid room;
- The size of the proposed clubhouse is approximately 600m2 (including covered areas). To give you an idea on how large this is, our existing clubhouse at Petersen Park is approximately 250m2 (including the covered area in front of the canteen).

The attached plans show the football fields within the Walker Road Sporting Precinct as well as a floor plan of the proposed Clubhouse.

Together with our club moving into this great new home ground we are continuing with our football development plans. This year we saw our Women battle it out in the FNQ Football Grand Final and both Men and Women's team winning the 2015 Strattie Cup at the end of the season.

This is a very exciting time for our club as we continue to be the fastest growing club in Cairns. The Southside Comets Committee would like to thank Cairns Regional Council for providing these great facilities that will make our club the envy of other football and sporting club’s not just in FNQ but the state!

We are only part way through our development plans started three years ago and 2016 will see some more football initiatives being rolled out at Comets, so watch this space for more exciting news.

Go Comets!
