Joey O'Brien has maintained the mantle of No 1 Umpire in the region after being named the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association (NCCUA) Umpire of the Year and their presentation night held recently.
It is the third time O'Brien has claimed the top award and comes on the back of him also being named BDAFL Umpire of the Year.
Patrick Lally went back-to-back winning the Field Umpire of the Year award. His decision making, experience and outstanding composure came to the fore in the finals series and most definitely gave him a leg up with this award.
Mayai Luck won the Boundary Umpire of the Year award in which performances throughout the season were outstanding.
The John Sullivan Goal Umpire of the Year Award was won by President, Jake Lowe, for the first time. He emulates his father, Adam's effort in winning the award in 2007.
The Most Promising Umpire (Golden Whistle) was split between Lincoln McCauley, who ran in the BDAFL Cup in both Field and Boundary, both with aplomb and Tom Sullivan, who umpired the BDAFL Cup Grand Final, for the second time in a row. Tom will be sadly missed next season as he heads off to Brisbane with his family. NCCUA's loss is AFLQ's gain.
Yuri Porter won the Best First Year Umpire Award. His efforts in the goals, willingness to listen and his attention to detail saw him umpire the Reserve Grade Grand Final at his first opportunity.
Ryan Stanton won the President's Award and Rachel Robinson won the Coaches Award.
In what was a brand new addition to the NCCUA's trophy cabinet, the Neville Turner Memorial Trophy was established. The 2017 committee decided that in memory of newly elevated NCCUA Hall of Fame "Legend", Neville Turner, an award be struck that exemplifies the standards, pride, attitude and service which Neville held in his time with us. The inaugural recipient, Stephen Blume, thoroughly deserved this award. His service to umpiring for someone so young are quite extroadinary. Apart from achieving outstanding results individually this season, Stephen ably mentored, coached and assisted others on the training track, gave his opinions on all matters football and umpiring, served on the committee and represented the association with pride.
A highlight of the Presentation Night was the presentation of the match ball, signed by both competing teams, to John Sullivan commemorating his 1,000th match.
In other significant presentations, Ashley Borg was made the NCCUA's 17 Life Member and Neville Turner was elevated to "Legend" status in the NCCUA Hall of Fame, with his wife Margaret present to collect the plaque as acknowledgement. Neville became the 2nd LEGEND of the NCCUA for his services to umpiring, especially as the Treasurer of the NCCUA from its inception until 2016.
