A couple of tough games in the second round of the year against very experienced opposition. Results were:
O45s 6.2.38 V Cooloongatta 7.11.53
O35s 7.3.45 V PBC 11.11.77
We were down a few regular players in both grades but I believe that we would have learned a lot from both games. The conditions were very hot and humid and both games were played in good Masters spirit.
Thanks must go to all our helpers on the day. Craig, Firmsey and family for organising a fantastic BBQ for all attending. We are working towards locking in game day and times for our next home games on the Anzac weekend. I hope to be able to confirm these in the next day or two.
Here is the match report for the Supers team.
The second game of the season saw the Siders Supers at home taking on Palm Beach on what turned out to be a very hot and humid Sunday morning. We expected a tough encounter with a team that traditionally fields guys that could (or are) still playing senior footy (or at least resies anyway!) Whilst we were again short on numbers, the boys were confident that we had a team that was going to be very competitive. Thanks very much to Beacon, Hulmey, Larry, Doulley and Karl for backing up from the Masters to at least give us a bench.
Things got off to a bit of a slow start for the Siders with Palm Beach jumping out to a 15 point lead at quarter time but with some accurate kicking by Palm Beach the score could have been much worse than 3 goals 5 behinds to 1 goal 2 behinds. The backline continually worked hard led by Selks whose spoiling was great given a pretty tough assignment as he found himself playing on someone Nugget thought was probably the best full forward in the comp.
The second quarter was not one of our finest and it is fair to say that we were clearly outclassed both in terms of ability to pick up the loose ball and also finding a target either by hand or by foot. Maybe it was the heat but even our quarter injection of late comer Kel into the middle didn't seem to stem the flow and for the first time this season the siders were held scoreless with Palm Beach adding another 3 goals 6 behinds. Again only inaccurate kicking by the visitors keeping us in the game. Damo and Coomsy spent most of the quarter running hard up and down the wing but unfortunately they had to also to spend too much time having to drop back to help out in defence. Selks together with Rikki and Craig also tried hard to stop the goals but at half time we found ourselves down by 39 points.
At half time Nugget delivered the biggest spray that most of us will have probably seen in the last few years playing masters footy but lets face it - it was fully deserved. Nugget implored us to get back to basics and think about what we had been working on at training - slow it down and find the target.
Well, whether it was the Nugget spray or Marcus slipped something in the water bottles, but we came out and played the best quarter of football most of us have seen in quite some time. Hatch and Dunc worked hard to give us first use in the middle and with Kel, Carbs and Nugget clearing it out, our leading forwards Paddy, Deano, Nick and Langers started to get the delivery they were craving in the first half. The other key ingredient to success for the quarter was when Barney was moved back to be a loose man in defence and together with Mic, Muzz, Beacon and Gadso, they formed a wall across half back. Numerous forward thrusts from Palm Beach were repelled with strong spoiling, hardness at the ball and great teamwork to get the ball moving back into our forward line. All up we kicked 5 goals straight and kept Palm Beach scoreless with numerous end to end goals - just great team footy guys and something we need to now use as our benchmark for the rest of the season. Goal kickers for the quarter included Big Dunc who ran into space in our open forward line, took the mark and then kicked truly from a set shot about 30m out - well done big fella. Down by 9 pts at three-quarter time and we were definitely back in the game.
Maybe it was a hangover from a brilliant 3rd quarter, but the last quarter started a bit too slowly for the siders with Palm Beach getting the jump with a couple of quick goals and whilst the backline kept working hard, we just seemed to run out of legs. Palm Beach also seemed to find their kicking boots and kicked 5 straight compared to our 1 goal 1 behind. With a final score of 11 11 77 to 7 3 45, the final margin was 33 points.
So, whilst a loss on the day, there is a lot for us to take out of our 3rd quarter efforts. Let's make sure we get to training and keep working on our skills.
Thanks to Longy for coming along to support the team and look after the siren and scoring. And a big thanks to Doulley and Young Gadso for running water (not just for the Supers but also for the Masters in the earlier game) Big thanks also to Craig for organising the BBQ and Firmsy (and daughters) as Chefs for more hours than they were originally asked.
Best: Carbs, Coomsy, Kel, Barney, Selks, Mick and Dunc
Goal Kickers: Carbs 2, Nugget, Dunc, Hulmey, Paddy, and Beacon
