2012 Round 10 Sandgate Masters vs Wynnum
Sandgate Masters were at home last Saturday and played the debutante team of Wynnum. Made up of mainly “Supers” players from last year, the Wynnum team ventured into the Masters comp this year, but haven’t been doing as well as expected. Sandgate expected a win and went out with one intention- to kick a good high score against them.
As with most home games we had a good turn out and had seven players on the bench to start the quarter. The forward line made a target to kick 5 goals a quarter and started well with goals from Middy (2) and Timmsy. The centre group of Joffa and Marty cleared the ball well resulting in more goals to Phil and Baxsy. The backline were doing a sensational job of cutting down any attack that Wynnum had. Carts, Sock and Mark Banks were all having solid games. Sandgate finished the quarter with seven goals three to one point.
As there were several players on the bench, and Wynnum receiving a few injuries, a few of our players filled in on their side to even it up- well done lads for volunteering- we all have done it sometime or another during the season. Our coaching group decided to offer our backline players an opportunity in the forwards for quarter two, but still expected the high scoring to continue. After Jamo took a great mark in the forward square and missed a sitter (even Sticks would have kicked that) they were starting to wonder if their decision was right, especially after the forwards had let two goals in. Sandgate went to the half leading by 47 points with goals from Dave Evans and Jamo (redeemed himself).
Sandgate welcomed back Robbie Nielson from a knee reconstruction and played as if he hadn’t been away. His free flowing running from the centre delivered several marks to the forward line, took some great grabs, and kicked a goal as well. The third quarter was pretty even with only two goals kicked from Sandgate, Phil and Steve Curran. Old Muddy had a great quarter and came oh so close to bagging a goal. Unfortunately Matt tore all ligaments and tendons from his ankle in a marking contest and an ambulance had to be called- awful luck Matt- was really enjoying the season as well.
With a good quarter talk from Peter, we went out to finish the game as we started - by kicking goals. They came quick and fast from Middy, Timmsy, Cam and Baxsy. TC was winning most rucks, old Dawsey was having a blinder on the ball and Mick had some great runs and marks on the wing. Sandgate finished the quarter well and were pleased with the kicking accuracy of the players, with only 9 behinds kicked to 16 goals. Our kicking training is finally paying off.
Thanks to all the support staff that assisted us on the paddock for the day (Peter, Willow, Fev, Chris, Steve, Joey, Crackers and more), Dale for umping and Jen for massaging- all very much appreciated. A few beers were had over at the clubhouse by all, including partners and friends, finishing another great Masters footy day.
Final score Sandgate 16-9-105 Wynnum 4-3-27
