Sandgate Masters were away last weekend to compete against the Redcliffe Tigers. Though we convincingly beat them by 6 goals in round 4, we knew they were understrength, and would come out firing in this match.
Sandgate started well with some quick handballing between players resulting in a short goal to Ian. Sandgates back line was responding well and resulted with other goals from Shirls and Middy. Old Phil had been giving heaps to Jason all fortnight for kicking the ball the wrong way last fortnight, so we couldn’t believe it when he did the same thing during the second quarter. His explanation of, “it was the best option”- just didn’t cut it. Our Umpire Router also learned a new lesson in umpiring- never take off your uniform and offer it to the opposing player to do- sometimes they accept! Redcliffe fought back in the 2nd quarter with several goals and we went to the break down by 10 points.
A rev up from Willow at half time didn’t seem to work, as we continually missed targets and crowded our forward line, spoiling opportunities. The centre group were doing a fine job with Timmsy winning procession and spoiling just as much. Old legend Craig Jephcott was showing he still has something to offer the 38’s and was led by Captain Mark Senior Sinclair who was crumbing and delivering well.
The final quarter was once again our finest football of the day. The football rarely got into our backline, but if it did, it was quickly won and either returned with accurate kicks from Carts, Banksy or Dale. It took several points before we drew equal on the scoreboard, and then a couple of quick goals from Phil, Middy and Bails secured a three goal win.
Sandgates season has been one of its finest with 7 wins from 10 rounds. It wouldn’t be possible without the support of its runners, water carriers and umpire Greg Bakx- thanks to you all.
Final score
Sandgate 13-12-90 defeated Redcliffe 10-5-65
Top effort award- Timmsy
Cup winner- Mark Sinclair
