On wet and windy day at Scoresby Recreation Reserve, East Burwood, with the aid of a 2-3 goal breeze, got off to a perfect start getting the centre clearance from the first bounce and goaling within the first 30 seconds of play.
The boys knuckled down and before long we managed to score our first major, with Jara Oburu scoring a nice goal from 35 meters out. In a fairly even first quarter, the scores were East Burwood 3.2.20 to Surrey Park 2.0.12 at Quarter Time.
With Surrey having the wind in the second, we managed to hit our strides with young forwards Matt Pollock and Adam Loundes getting involved and Hamish Burrill and Zach Moore getting plenty of the ball in the middle. Scoring three goals, we took a five-point lead in at half time, Surrey 5.3.33 to EB 4.4.28.
With East Burwood having use of the breeze in the third, we had to knuckle down and make sure we remained in touch for the last quarter. The boys played wonderfully, Ryan Higgins in the ruck played strongly and Pollock was marking well up forward and converting. That we were able to extend our lead in the third quarter to nine points at the last change, was testament to our players commitment. Surrey 7.7.49 to EB 6.4.40. Surrey supporters dared to dream at the break.
With the wind and rain picking up in the last, the game was ours for the taking.
Another goal to Pollock, then one to Backman Riley Tempany and Tom Veitch, the margin extended out to a match high 24 points. A late goal to EB bought it back before Surrey converted another major to push the margin out again.
The siren sounded to the elation of players, their families and the supporters to record a 23-point victory, our first premiership in 15 years.
