We need the Panther Army to mobilise and head down to Walker Reserve and support the boys as we search for our first under 19 premiership since 1999.
Congratulations to all to that have been selected in the team to represent Surrey tomorrow, and a special mention to all the players that took the field in the team this year that missed out on the game this weekend.
There will be a post grand final (hopefully premiership…) celebration at the club rooms tomorrow afternoon, 1.30 to 3.30, all are welcome.
Last Weekend
The reserves played in Saturday’s preliminary final against Forest Hill, last year’s reserves premier. After a fairly even first term, Forest Hill started to push away in the second to take a 14-point lead at half time, 6.2 to 3.4. The third term was a dour struggle, with either side not able to score a goal and in fact Forest Hill scoreless, we were still down at the final change, 6.2 to 3.7.
The last quarter saw Surrey get an early goal and continued to press throughout the quarter. We attached the ball really well, but our finishing let us down with consecutive minor scores. A late goal, followed by some more behinds, and with Forest Hill still unable to kick a goal in the second half, we found ourselves in front by a solitary point with less than a minute to go.
A quick transition from their backline to a mark in front of goal, 30 meters out, and it looked like our opponents would score their first second half goal in the shadows of the final siren and steal the win. The kick went well wide, and before the game could restart, the siren sounded and scores were level, Surrey Park 5.11.41 to Forest Hill 6.5.41.
So extra time, two five-minute halves plus time on, was played and after a couple of minutes Forest Hill were able to force a shot on goal and did not miss. We had a late ‘first half’ chance to score, but missed, so we were down 7 points at the last change. Forest Hill were able to hold us to just one behind, and score one themselves, to finish 7.8.50 to Surrey 5.12.42, and we were left to lament what might have been.
We are incredibly proud of our young side and are very excited about the future with this group pushing for regular senior selection in 2019.
Our best was Matt Hughes, Tom Veitch and Zach Tempany, while Paul Collopy and Tom Veitch both booted two goals.
Junior Grand Finals
Congratulations to all the Surrey Park Junior teams that participated in grand finals last weekend, and a big well done to the Under 11 boys and Under 14 girls, for their premiership wins, and the Under 15 boys, also took out the premiership having beaten the previously undefeated Ivanhoe!
