Senior Club Update
Last weekend the 19’s had a bye, so the reserves, kicked off the dew at Donvale against the home side who are sitting second on the ladder. In a tight, low scoring contest we trailed by eight points at half time, after Donvale kicked a goal right on the siren. The third quarter saw some undisciplined play by Surrey, with several 25-metre penalties costing us dearly which handed some easy goals and allowed Donvale to skip out to a 27 point lead at the last change. We settled in the last and played some better footy but the damage was done, and we fell 6.5.41 to 11.8.74. We have showed in the last two weeks that we can match the top sides, but will need to play smarter to knock them off in the finals. Tom Badcock and Dec Hauser each kicked two while Ben Elbaz and Badcock were named our best. We hold our place in the top four and the chance to play in finals for the first time in a while is ours for the taking.
The seniors took on top placed side Donvale looked evenly matched in the first, going into quarter time just five points behind. Donvale managed to put a gap between us and them leading by 24 points and half time then 42 at three quarter time. A last quarter rally managed to cut the final margin back to three gaols, with the final score 12.6.78 to 14.12.96. The loss meant the senior side is officially out of finals contention. Graeme Johns again did well kicking four, and his season tally to 59, Justin Cuzzupi kicked three (35 for the season) while Dan Smart and Jayden Murphy were named our best.
This week’s game will be the last for spearhead Graeme Johns, who has announced his retirement. In a stellar career with both Blackburn and Surrey Park, Graemehas been an unbelievable contributor to our club and we are sure the boys will do their best to get the side up for a win against Glen Waverley who sit at the just above us on the ladder. We are encouraging all members and supporters to be at the ground at 2.00pm to send him off in the best way possible. We also welcome back Darcy Sketcher back into the team after a number of weeks off through injury.
