First up we saw the 19’s take on Vermont (a.k.a. Forest Hill Eagles) which, unfortunately for us, turned out to be a rather one-sided affair, with the boys going down by 76 points. Our best was none other than the President’s Son, Nick Tanner.
The big news leading up to the Reserves game was the appointment of Reserves Captain Andrew Venables as caretaker coach for the remainder of the season, taking over from Ben Fisher. Andrew led the team (from the sidelines) with aplomb and the boys were able to respond in the best way possible, delivering a resounding victory not seen since Roger I of Sicily led the Norman Conquests in the 11th Century.
The 26.23.179 to 0.1.1 was highlighted by Andrew ‘Buck’ Rogers eight goals and in Tom Ross’ BOG performance and took out the Surrey Barbers Player of the Day – his sponsor Jacinta Mulholland was not in the rooms after the game so the prize jackpots to $75 next home game.
There was more carnage to come in the main game, with a score line not seen at Surrey Park in many a long year, perhaps ever (well it’s happened with Surrey on the receiving end a few times...) with Surrey piling on in each quarter 5.10, 11.5, 8.8 and 6.10 we ended the day on 30.33.213 to Nunawading 0.1.1. While it was a resounding victory coach Scott Hamill was disappointed that our inaccurate kicking cost us further valuable percentage points.
Our best was Dan Toma who took out the Aqualink Café Player of the Day and his sponsor Hamish Kinsella picked up $50,
Another highlight of the day was the Past Players Reunion – it was fantastic to see so many past players from Surrey Hills, East Camberwell and Surrey Park that made it out to the game on Saturday – all had a great afternoon (which turned into a great evening) and we are in the planning stage for next year’s 30th anniversary of the 1987 Surrey Hills premiership.
A call out to Surrey Hills and Surrey Park past player Rob Stilling, who also happens to be the first ever coach of Surrey Park’s very own Josh Gibson (who has also played a few games for Hawthorn). Josh plays his 200th game this weekend and Rob was on Gold 104.3 this morning talking about Surrey and Josh’s early days…click here to listen

This week we are away at the Eastern Lions ground in Boronia, if we can take away the points it will leave the Senior XVIII 5-4 win loss at the half way mark of the year and a real opportunity to taste finals for the first time for a few years. We welcome back from injury Kane Henden and Zach Tempany and (after knocking on the door all year) Tom Ross into the side this week.
Thanks to all our sponsors and particularly Breadstreet in Hamilton St Mont Albert. David and the team are fantastic supporters of the local community and at Surrey Park we appreciate that support. Please make sure you support them in turn and mention you’re from Surrey.
