Ferntree Gully managed to attack against the wind but thanks to our great defence, particularly a strong contested mark to Noah Bennett, we managed to restrict them to three behinds.
Ferntree Gully began the second quarter still kicking poorly. Great marks to Nick Tanner and Harry Lachianna were a highlight of the early part of the term. When forward pressure caused a turnover, Will Grant found the ball and snapped truly from the pack. Another standout moment was when James Marshall managed to hold the ball up while battling four opposition players. However, Ferntree Gully eventually managed to find their targets and the goals with fast ball movement from defence allowing them to slam on three quick goals. Veitch managed a great tackle, but we were finding it difficult to maintain possession.
Only seven points down, Surrey needed a strong third quarter with the wind, but it was Ferntree Gully who attacked early and only strong defence from Gilbert, Tanner, Bennett and Bohanna stopped them from setting up an impossible lead. When Rogers forced the ball to Will Grant for a goal, then followed up with a snap of his own a minute later, Surrey looked like they might be able set up the game for a thrilling last quarter. Ferntree Gully persisted and after several strong contests managed to score a couple of goals. Liam Mooney's superb chase and tackle stopped another likely goal, but Ferntree Gully now had their tails up.
In the final quarter, Surrey Park tried hard. A great tackle from Hauser was unrewarded by the umpire, but it did lead to a shot for our first behind of the game. When some great work on the boundary line from Coglan worked the ball into the goal square, it only needed someone to get a boot to it and we'd have had an easy goal, but unfortunately it ended with our second behind. Our final score for the quarter was thanks to a great contested mark and pass by Hauser. Unfortunately, we were finding it harder to score majors against the wind and the resultant shot was only a behind.
Ferntree Gully managed to run out winners 8-13 (61) to 4-3 (27)
Goal kickers: Will Grant 2, Tom Rogers, Henry Coglan
