Early on scoring was difficult with Ferntree Gully smothering several of our attempts, but eventually "Buck" Rogers earned a free and kicked truly. After a great tackle from Dan Smart, we managed to push the ball forward and a handpass from Paul Collopy to Ryan Grant gave us our second goal.
Rogers scored his second goal of the quarter after trying to tap the ball on to James Box in the goal square, but while unsuccessful the opposition failed to kill the ball and Rogers kicked off the ground to have us leading comfortably. When Surrey followed with a bullet like pass from Tim O'Loughlin to Rogers who goaled after taking well-judged low mark and some strong work from the forwards enabled Veitch to snap a left footed goal, it looked like we were in for a good day with five straight goals to Ferntree Gully's one goal two behinds the score at quarter time.
However, the second quarter was a different story. Ferntree Gully were starting to adjust to playing a side which was giving them more pressure and they began to hit their targets. It took a chain of clever handpasses to get the ball to Boxy who marked and sent the ball to the goal square where Inaria soccered it through for a major. Luckily, our opponents were missing shots and when Harry Lacchiana kicked it off the ground we'd managed to maintain a comfortable lead going into the long break.
After half-time, the third quarter was a slog with neither side managing more than a single goal. Our highlights were an inspired few minutes from Oliver Anderson at both ends of the ground marking and gathering the loose balls, and a goal to James Box from a free kick.
While the boys tried hard in the final quarter, Ferntree Gully managed to score a couple of quick goals and with their tails up, they moved the ball quickly and hit the lead. Injuries to Inaria and Dowling slowed our momentum, but in the end the opposition ran out winners 9-11 (65) to 8-5 (53).
