It was a bleak day on the weather front with dark skies and constant rain in the early match. The under 19’s took a little while to get into gear as the opposition scored two early goals and held us to just one goal in the first half. The boys dug deep and managed to play some great wet-weather football in the second half, taking a nine point lead into the last quarter. Vermont / Forest Hill attacked the goals for most of the final quarter, but our defence held solid and with each team scoring a solitary goal in the last to hand our boys a five point victory.
This has left them three from three to open the season, sitting second on the ladder.
Best Players were Oliver Anderson, Matt Goodings, Tom Dowling, Kane Hendon, Callum Ternes and Ben Gandolfo, while the Goal Kickers were Ben Gandolfo with 2, while Matt Goodings, Tom Badcock and Danyon Smart each scored 1. The boys have a bye next week, then in a quirk of the draw play Vermont / Forest Hill again in two weeks.
The scene was set for the ‘Two’s’ at home to take on Nunawading. The boys managed to hit the scoreboard early with big Baz working hard and Jimmy Wright reveling in the conditions. A strong display saw us take a handy two goal lead in at the first change. The second and third quarters were pretty tight with just a few goals each, however Nunawading got back into the game just five points behind Surrey at the last break.
Coach Ben Fisher implored the team to dig deep and bring home their first win for the season. It was great to see the boys really run out the game with Ben Broadway rising to the occasion up forward along with captain David Wright and a spectacular last quarter goal by James ‘Big Papa’ Roche was a highglight. The backline was lead brilliantly by Matt Anderson and Dean Spencer repelling Nunawadings attack.
Surrey managed to score four goals to one in the last to take out a 26 point victory.
The best players for Surrey were Harry Cook, David Wright, Matt Anderson, Ben Broadway and Jimmy Wright, while Ben Broadway kicked 3 goals, David Wright, Rohan. Cleary and James Roche kicked 2 and Jimmy. Wright 1
By the afternoon the skies had cleared somewhat and a large crowd had built for what we hoped would be our first victory for the season. As with the first two games, our boys hit the ground running and had plenty of the play early on. Nuna scored the first goal but we were able to answer shortly after with Paul Young slotting a brilliant goal from 45 meters on the tightest of angles. That proved to be one of the few highlights for Surrey for the match.
One goal each at quarter time, then two goals to one at half time (in Nunawading’s favour) sums up the first half. Nunawading kicked away with three goals in each of the last two quarters whilst Surrey could only manage one more for the game. We had plenty of the all, but our inability to score ultimately cost us any chance of taking the points.
For Surrey, Paul Young and Tim McGlone each scored a goal while our best was Liam Doidge and first-gamer Richard Scott.
