The day got off to a great start with the under 19's playing very well and taking out a comfortable 19 point win. With Ferntree Gully sure to be in the finals mix this year, the win will give our boys confidence at this early stage. Best Players included new Captain Kane Henden , Nate Briscomb , Matt Goodings , Dan Smart , James Gray and Matt Sorrenti
With great excitement the Seconds then entered the field, with scores pretty close up to half time FTG ran away with a thumping 108 point win. We will say however, that there wont be too many other Reserves teams this year that we come up against with a 185 game AFL player running around for them. Our best were the big fella James Roche , Richard Scott (in his first senior appearance for his career), Christian Domini , Matt Rupena (in his 100th game for Surrey), Ben Broadway and Blake Mios.
The senior side ran out with great expectations and certainly didn't let the strong band of Surrey Supporters down that had made their way out to FTG.
After dominating the first 10 minutes of the game our biggest issue was our score 1.3 to nothing. With 'Johnsy' running around like a teenager, Luke Francis presenting well across half-forward and Dan Toma cutting off everything across half-back we looked set for a big day. FTG with a late goal had us up two points at quarter time. The second quarter was again a low scoring affair with 'Crabbers' and 'Buck' doing a lot of the heavy work. Again the backline worked very well repelling FTG forays with Dan Toma, Hayden Ruggeri and Dan Scalise all doing well. FTG by a point at the main break.
The third quarter saw FTG pile on four goals to our one, so by three quarter time we were 20 points down, Coach Brett Davidson asked for a big last quarter and made some positional moves that had immediate impact. Big Andrew Rogers scored a goal within the first minute and with some undisciplined play from FTG Tom Hardisty was able to slot another one not long after. In a tense last quarter we were able to keep coming and get within a kick with still 5 minutes to go. Ben Vile, Zac Tempany and Glen Pearce all shone as did Darcy Sketcher at Full Back. FTG managed a goal on the rebound and we found ourselves 8 points down with a few minutes to play. The team never gave up, but time was against us and the final margin of 8 points was a reflection of the two teams competitiveness on the day.
Final Score, FTG 10.9.69 to Surrey Park 8.13.61.
