Mixed results for our netball girls THIS WEEK with a win and a loss in two very high standard games of netball.
Mitcham Yellow came up against The Basin in what proved to be a high scoring affair. After a thrilling 1 goal win last week we were not quite able to get the job done last night . With just seven players this week and a defender a short the girls conceded the lead early and despite remaining within striking distance for the entirety of the game, were unable to overcome the deficit. Lynch 21 goals and Fairbairn 11 kept the scoreboard ticking over and a valiant effort saw the Basin escape with a 45-39 win.
On a perfect night for netball the Mitcham Black girls once again saluted, overcoming a scrappy start and a determined Lilydale outfit to run away 17-9 victors. The stadium thermometer read 18.6 degrees, but the first quarter saw some serious HEAT with neither side giving an inch. Coach Jacko urged a defence first mindset, which was executed brilliantly, resulting in a low scoring slog that saw scores locked at 4-4 at the break. The second term saw an extremely miserly effort from the Mitcham back half as we kept Lilydale scoreless. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite capitalise going back the other way, as like a reality tv contestant trying to stay relevant, Lilydale’s defence just kept clinging on. At 1/2 time we led by 2 goals.
The floodgates opened in the second half but unlike Noah, Lilydale did not have 100 years to build an ark that could withstand it. Throughout the second half we gradually wore them down, and continue to look more composed with each quarter that passes. After a winless year in 2020 (felt an average covid-19 joke was necessary somewhere in here), the Tiger Train once again looks on track and the team looks ready to push into the business end of the season. Thanks to all those who came out to support!
