The Mitcham Football club wish to advise that Senior Coach Neil Winterton and Reserves Coach Steve Jordan have had their contracts extended keeping them in their respective positions for season 2019.
Although the club has had an extremely disappointing year on field, the committee and football department are adamant the club are heading in the right direction. In what was always going to be a tough season the club introduced some exciting youth into our senior system and the signs have been extremely positive.
Senior President Matt McCubbin said “Both Neil & Jordy have been fantastic for our club over many years now and I'm confident both still have what it takes too improve our list and take them forward in Division 2 next season. While this year has been frustrating for many of us, the club were quite aware season 2018 would be difficult from day one. Our young recruits have shown plenty of upside this year and will only get better having had a full year of senior footy under their belts.
This decision now allows our football department to concentrate on player retention and recruiting. With an understanding of where the club sits on-field we can now move to fill in the gaps we have identified from the past season.”
Neil Winterton won a Division 3 premiership in his first year at the club in 2015. Heading into his fifth year as senior coach he is still excited about the prospect of success with this list going forward. “I’m thrilled to be appointed for 2019 season. Under the leadership of Matt McCubbin and Dane Wilson the club is in a strong and stable position both on and off field. No doubt it is extremely disappointing to be relegated, but given the age demographic of the list, the near future promises to be very fruitful. We had 13 players make their senior debut for the club this season, 8 of which were still eligible to play under 19’s highlighting the exciting young players the club has at their disposal. I know that the club has already started their recruiting strategy, and we will aggressively pursue the appropriate players to help take the list forward.
Thanks to Matt, Dane and the committee for the continual support and faith that they have shown in me. I look forward to seeing the tiger army out in force in season 2019.
Reserves coach Steve Jordan also won a premiership in 2015 and understands more than most at the club how the clubs list has changed over the last year. Steve has played a pivotal part in the development of the club’s younger players pushing each one of them into a position where they can play senior football. Steve said "Everyone has learnt so much this season and there are plenty of positives to reflect on. As coaches we have an outstanding group of people to work with and I can’t wait to get into it again come November. I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to continue coaching the reserves side in 2019 and we look forward to a much-improved season for both sides.”
With the Under 19’s side poised to play finals this year the club will sit down with their coaching staff after their season has been completed. We wish Kevin Bentley and his boys all the best in what will be an exciting few weeks ahead for our 19’s.
