From a pure game day sense wasn’t our greatest weekend on field. Netball girls went down by a couple of goals but still maintain their top four positions on the ladder. Under 19s perhaps got a head of themselves and lost a game against Wanny Sth who simply wanted it more, although bad kicking for goal didn’t help the cause. Cody MacDonald with 4 majors was the leading goal kicker with NO best players given. Reserves got shown a clean pair of heels from start to finish going down by 49 points. McArdle with 3 goals was the leading goal scorer with Elms, Finch, Pavey, McArdle, De Luca and Van Horik all named in the best. Seniors had their chances trailing by only 11 points at ¾ time but a terrible last quarter where Wanny Sth banged on 8 goals to one cost them dearly going down by 58 points. McCubbin with 2 was our only multiple goal scorer as Nicholas, Cherry, De Luca, Toohey, McKeown and Uren were all named in the best.
Off field club enjoyed an excellent night with over 200 attending the 130th dinner. Once again the St John’s Ballroom came up a treat thanks to efforts of Michelle Lucas, Dane Wilson, Craig Giles, Brian Lucas, Aaron Blundell, Gavin Ward, Tom Lucas and Sean Giles and of course the Pres Matt McCubbin. Also a BIG SHOUT out to one of the clubs major Sponsors Al & Kim Wilson from Colourtech who supplied all the signage in the room. Al & Kim continually help lift the standard of the clubs advertising and the promotion of our sponsors with the quality of their product and work. Al and Kim are also fantastic supporters and volunteers of the club and we thank them for their continued support over so many years.
After an excellent dinner provided by another one of the clubs major sponsors Nickos tavern, the formal part of the evening had Senior President Matt McCubbin speak about the significant milestone in the clubs long and proud history. He touched on the junior and senior clubs strong working relationship which allows the easy transition from junior to senior footy, the clubs ability to run large, successful functions, the growth of netball and the volunteers and supporters that make the club such an enjoyable place to be involved.
Past player and life member Russell Witherow then gave an outline on the clubs foundation, the glory days and the years leading us into where we find ourselves now. Current junior president Craig Giles gave an insight as to where the club is headed in the near future based on our junior system and the processes that have been put in place over the last few years.
Perhaps the biggest announcement came when Dee Ryall MP, liberal member for Ringwood, also announced a 500k election sweetener for the club if her party wins government. This is on top of the $3.45m already committed to the club for a massive redevelopment of the walker park pavilion.
The large crowd was then treated to some fine tunes form one of Melbourne’s leading cover bands Popcorn as they danced the night away. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mitcham Football Club; 130 years makes this football club not only one of the oldest clubs in the EFL but one of the oldest in Australia.
BIG THANK YOU to Graham Bradtke for the excellent photos, bar staff Toby Ward, Tom Peace and Josh Hopkins, waiters from our under 19s - Tim Ross, Max Hammond, Tony Kim, Spiro’s Antoniou, Zach Horsey and Adam Laksassi and Aaron Blundell for supervising.
Senior Coach Report
This week we travelled out to Wantirna Sth a ground we have struggled to play well at in the past.
We started the game well but didn’t hit the scoreboard and Wantirna Sth took their chances when they had the ascendency, and went into the ¼ time break with an 11 point lead.
The 2nd quarter was relatively even with Wantirna Sth extending their lead out to 15 points.
We started the 3rd quarter slowly and they kicked out to a 4 goal lead, but we finished strongly and had cut the margin back to 11 points at ¾ time
We felt we were a good chance going into the last quarter but we were unable to match it with Wantirna Sth and they kicked away for a commanding 58 point win.
We have next week off due to the split round and we need to regroup and find a way to compete for 4 quarters if we are to be successful for the remainder of the season.
Riley Nicholas and Jess Cherry continued their recent good form in a great sign for the future of the club.
Our next game is a home fixture against Park Orchards we hope to see you all out there.
