The Mitcham Football Club is delighted to announce that finally our juniors have secured a second ground - Koonung Reserve, Springfield Road, Blackburn North
The significant growth in the number of teams we field at the Mitcham Junior Football Club, 6 teams in 2014 compared to 16 teams in 2017, has been tremendous for our club but has also put a considerable strain on the ability of the single oval we have access to – Walker Park in accommodating all the games and training sessions required.
After 18 months of negotiation, Koonung Reserve will become the second home of the Mitcham Junior Football Club. The juniors have now been allocated training at the venue on Tuesday, Wednesday (both ovals) and Thursday nights and have also been allocated the West oval to host junior games on a Sunday. Junior President Craig Giles said that “”Given where we started from and some of the alternative options presented, to have secured Koonung as a second ground is a fantastic result for the club. Quite clearly Koonung was the perfect fit for the Mitcham Junior Footy club, meeting all of our requirements in terms of geography, facilities and playing surface.
Craig went on to say that “’We would like to acknowledge the support and assistance of Councillor for Springfield Ward Prue Cutts and State Member for Ringwood Dee Ryall who have been very active in working with Whitehorse Council to present and support our case. We have also been able to work very professionally with Laura Shaw from Whitehorse Council who has managed to achieve an outcome that involved working with a considerable number of parties’’
The Junior Club will now work with their teams to develop training and playing options that will provide balance and improved training opportunities for all 16 Mitcham JFC boys and girl’s teams.
