Senior Coaches Report
After a long 2 week wait grand final day finally arrived and Melbourne turned on the weather for us with a warm 24 degree day. The reserves kick started the day for us with a determined win that really set the scene for us. During pre game preparations and warm ups you could tell how focused the boys were and how much they wanted to taste success.
We got off to a blistering start with Higgo getting his hands on the ball around the stoppages and our mids forcing the ball forward quickly to our forwards who were on the move and looking dangerous. With the aid of the breeze we held a 26 point lead at quartet time. We knew the basin would come hard at us in the 2nd quarter and so it proved with them lifting their work rate and gaining the ascendancy around the stoppages, their small forwards started to look dangerous and by the main break they had pegged the margin back to 4 points. We knew how important the 3rd quarter would be but after kicking 2 quick goals at the start of the term the basin did well to break even for the rest of the quarter and restrict us to an 11 point lead at the 3 quarter time.
Despite kicking against the breeze in the last quarter we were confident that we would have fitness on our side and that we would finish running on top of the ground. You could tell early in the last quarter how much the game meant to the group as they all dug deep and called upon all their strength and determination.
Our intensity around the footy lifted and we started to get our running game going which gave our forwards plenty of one on one opportunities. Our backline proved impenetrable and repelled their forward thrusts setting us up well from defence. We managed to kick 6.6 to 1.3 for the quarter which to do so against the breeze was a phenomenal effort. The emotion that all the players showed after each goal really highlighted how much this meant to them. Congratulations to Witta who won the best on ground medal to top off a super finals series and season.
Higgo was a monster in the ruck all day and Rob Petracca really stood up in the last quarter when the game was there to be won. Each and every player really contributed on the day and we had no passengers which made the task much easier. To Carl, Dave, Strongy, Steve and Jordy thanks for all your support right throughout the season we certainly couldn't have won this without your input.
To Macca, Dane and the rest of the committee thank you for giving me the opportunity to the coach the club and for all your support since day 1. To the supporters the support that you have shown the players right throughout the season has been incredible, week in week out you guys have shown up rain, hail or shine. To have so many people turn up to training on Thursday night and then to see how many we had there on the Sunday was mind boggling, We couldn't have done this without you and this win belongs to you guys as much as the players. We look forward to seeing you all at presentation night and again next season as we take the step up to division 2. Finally to the players thanks for everything you guys have done during the season you guys have worked so hard and really deserved this win
