A mixed bag of results for the Mitcham Boys this week against The Boronia Hawks in Round 5. A very undermanned U19’s side fought hard all day to fall short by only 7 points after being down by 32 points at ¾ time. Couldn’t fault the boys who were unlucky not to pull off an upset win under the circumstances.
The Reserves again struggled to get their game going early and the coach would have been disappointed with the slow start.A much better performance in the second half but again plenty to work on with the Boys going down by 4 goals in the end.
The seniors started a little slower than normal in difficult conditions failing to hit the scoreboard when it mattered. Inaccuracy in front of goals throughout the first half could have come back to haunt them. The boys were definitely challenged by Boronia but a strong last quarter against the wind was enough to get the job done, keeping their unbeaten winning streak alive for yet another week. Mitcham 8.17.65 def Boronia 7.2.44.
Big thank-you to the Junior committee, players and families for turning up in huge numbers for the annual family day to support the senior club. The outer side of Walker park looked more like a carnival than a football ground and it was fantastic to have all our under 8s playing at half time of the senior game, especially when you consider how tough a week our junior club had in advocating extremely hard behind the scenes on behalf of the MJFC and all the clubs in the area to make sure a solution was found to allow the children affected by the recent underage ruling to be able to play out the 2015 season
So on behalf of ALL the Mitcham Faithful Your support is much appreciated and it’s fantastic to see our “one club” mentality paying off!!
Under 19's:
This week provided a great test for our boys. The chance to take on a quality top four opponent without several of our quality players. The message from the start was to continue to play our brand of football. Boys playing unfamiliar roles including several first year players would always make that a little harder, but to their credit they stepped up when it was required. The first half was fairly even and played n difficult conditions with a tricky breeze. Tom Lucas and Mikey Raath were exceptional in the middle while Blake Dossor gave us first use in the ruck especially in the second half where he was required to do most of the work in his own. Boronia kicked away in the third quarter putting our backs under immense pressure. Tommy Blanche, Toby Ward and Mick Barro were all fantastic down back and kept the opposition honest every time they went forward. Boronia led by 5 goals at the last break but our boys refused to go down without a fight. Down and out with no bench rotations due to further injuries, the boys stepped up to the challenge. The backs and mids gave everything and eventually provided our forwards the opportunity to start what was a fantastic comeback. Sam Howell and Adam Glanville gave us the spark we needed, rewarding the hard work at the other end of the ground. Unfortunately the boys fell short by 5 points after having several opportunities to pinch what would have been a memorable win. Most pleasing aspect of the game was our ability to react when challenged against a quality opposition, something that will sit in the back of the boys minds for the remainder of the season. Another tough match this week against Upper FTG, a challenge we look forward to tackling head on.

Reserves:
Saturday saw us defeated by a very skilled and disciplined team in Boronia, full credit to them. Our boys produced a first half that no one could be proud of with our ball usage and effort not where it should’ve been, it showed on the score board by being 5 goals down at the break. We collected ourselves for the 3rdqtr where we fought back to get within 8 points, Chris Whitchell was excellent kicking 3 for the term and really showed his class, Phil Muscara on the ball also gave us good drive. We were working into a heavy wind in the final term and we eventually fell short by 4 goals, the damage had been done in the first two quarters. Tarv Murphy was terrific all day on the wing and half forward, Dylan Wylde was solid in defence and Toddy in the ruck was one of our best. The second half showed that when we are switched on and the group effort is there our footy is as good as anyone’s, it’s consistency that requires work and needs to improve, well done to the Seniors, 5 in a row great stuff!

Seniors:
Round 5 saw us come up against Boronia, the game was played in blustery conditions with a 3-4 goal breeze to one end making for a scrappy contest. In the first half we faced a disciplined team orientated side who took it right up to us and deservedly went to main break with a handy 13 point advantage. In the third quarter we played a much better brand of football getting on top around the stoppages and using the ball better going forward, unfortunately we didn't take full advantage kicking 4.7 for the quarter. Holding an 11 point lead heading into the last quarter was always going to make life difficult for us given that Boronia had the wind in the last quarter. After conceding the first goal of the quarter we managed to keep them scoreless for the rest of the match and run out victors by 21 points. It was really pleasing to see the boys dig deep when we were up against it and fight to get the 4 points when things weren't going our way. Jack Purcell was super all day down back for us and had great support from Jackson Glossop as well. Jarrod Andreatta battled hard all day for us in the ruck and around the contest and Braeden Cross played his usual two way game.
A BIG Thank you to the junior club for the family day and to all the supporters who came along to watch. We have a big challenge this week against Upper Gully so if you can get along to the match I know all the players would appreciate it.
