The Flag flying at Saturdays Home ANZAC games belonged to our very own Justin Robinson, number 58, who plays in the Reserves side for Mitcham.
The flag has been with Justin since the start of his military career in 2004 and has travelled on every major training activity and operational deployment. These operational deployments include the Australian Defence Force contribution to the 2nd Bali Bombings in 2005, support to Australian Nationals caught in the Fijian Coup 2007, Afghanistan in 2009/10, and Afghanistan in 2012 and the Solomon Islands in 2013.
It’s most notable use has been to mark and highlight Australian positions on the ground during an engagement with the insurgents in May 2012 which enabled US attack helicopters to suppress the enemy and for casualty evacuation helicopters to evacuate a wounded soldier from the Mirabad Valley in Afghanistan.
When not carried on patrol it would be raised with the Flag of Afghanistan in Patrol Base Wali, Mirabad Afghanistan.
Thank you to Justin Robinson for letting us use such a meaningful symbol as we commemorated Anzac day
