Trent Georgiou's career as a Mustang is on hiatus, but he's set to feature in an historic ANZAC Day match in France this weekend.
You may remember Trent from his time in the backline, and are no doubt familiar with his dad, George, who is a fixture at every Mooroolbark clash.
Trent has been spending time in England, along with fellow Mustang Sean McManus, and has been starring for the Wandsworth Demons, an Australian rules team that plays in Clapham Common, south London, but will this weekend represent Australia.
This year marks the seventh time the ANZAC Cup has been contested on the battlefields of Villers Bretonneux in France. In World War One, the Germans attacked the French village, after first using poisonous gas and artillery. When night fell, the ANZACs stormed from their trenches and counter-attacked. A British General, who himself had won a Victoria Cross for bravery, called the ANZACs’ attack “perhaps the greatest individual feat of the war”. Ever since, the residents of the village have been thankful towards the ANZACs, and now commemorate ANZAC Day with services and also three games of Australian rules against an Australian team, in which Trent will feature on what will be the 100th anniversary of the landing in Gallipoli. He says he can't wait. Players are also billeted out to local families to get to know the area and its community.
We will be recognising the service of our armed forces on Saturday ourselves, but how thrilling it is to know one of our own will be on the battlefields himself, doing Australia and Mooroolbark proud! Good luck Trent.
