How to describe this day?
Our C Grade girls started off with a tough game against Yea for Premiership glory!
The girls bolted out of the blocks with a 9 goal to 2 first quarter, and Yea couldn't seem to recover. Our defenders totally shut down the Yea goalers, which included the League Best & Fairest. Pressure was applied all over the court and the girls went in to the quarter time break with a comfortable 7 goal lead.
Yea picked up in the second quarter, with more accurate shooting, but our girls still held a 5 goal lead at half time.
The Demons really turned it on in the 3rd quarter, keeping Yea to 1 goal, whilst our goalies kept the score ticking over with 5.
The last quarter was terrific, even though Yea put up more of a fight, the girls continued with their beautiful, unselfish play and scored 9 goals to Yea's 7, to finish on top 27 - 16.
A fantastic effort by the underdogs, and the best possible start to our day!
The B Grade nervously took to the court after watching C Grade demolish Yea, and hoped the trend would continue. Also starting as underdogs due to Yea's superior form during the season, the girls expected a really tough, physical game. The spectators were not disappointed!
In a fast and high scoring quarter, both teams were out to get an early break, but it was not to be, with Powelly holding a slim 1 goal lead at quarter time 13 - 12. With both team's defence and goal ends performing well, it looked like it was going to be a match of endurance.
In the second quarter the Demons played wonderfullly consistent and accurate netball to out score Yea by 8 and hold a handy 9 goal lead at half time. The pressure on the passer all the way down the court was excellent, with many turnovers going our way. The goalers couldn't miss, which was reward for the rest of the teams hard work.
The 3rd quarter also belonged to the Demons, outscoring Yea by 2 goals and continuing to play patient, unselfish team netball. At 3/4 time the girls held an 11 goal lead.
Yea rallied in the last quarter, to win the quarter by 2 goals, but it was not enough. The Powelly girls had worked very hard to have a good buffer, and deserved to win this game. In the end it was not quite the match we were expecting, but it was wonderful to see the girls play so well against the team they had not beaten until finals. Final score 43 - 34.
Two down, one to go...
The A Grade girls were now feeling the pressure! With two flags already in our hands, it was up to them to finish the clean sweep - and what a match!
In a wonderful spectacle, spectators were treated to a fast paced, high standard match, which could have gone either way. The sun was out and a gusty wind had developed.
The lead changed so many times throughout the match, both teams were giving it their all, and it was a heart stopping match to watch.
The first quarter started very evenly, with nerves on display from both teams. Both goal ends were scoring well, and the defenders were playing very close. It looked like it would come down to centre court players. Powelly held a 1 goal lead at quarter time 13 -12.
The second quarter was more of the same, with interceptions all over the court, goals rarely missed and defenders doing everything they could to steal the ball. This term saw Yea get their nose in front, outscoring the Demons by 3 goals to have a 2 goal lead at half time.
The 3rd quarter started with the Demons having a really good couple of minutes to score consecutively and retain the lead, but not for long - the remainder of the quarter played out as the whole match had - lead changes, intercepts, rebounds and mistakes by both teams. At 3 quarter time the scores were level, and the girls had to start over again!
The final quarter was fantastic, nothing could separate these teams. Powelly would get out to a 2 or 3 goal lead, then Yea would reel us back in to take the lead - this continued for the remainder of the match and ... Yep! Level at the siren!
The girls now had to regroup for time on (7 minutes each end - almost another full quarter!) and continue to fight for this prize. Again the lead changed many times, and on several occasions the Demons looked out of it, but some brilliant work by our centre court players, and wonderful goaling by Sam kept us hanging in, unfortunately with a few minutes to go until the final siren we were down by a couple again!
The defenders found a little extra, and finally managed to get the better of Yea's goalers, who had not missed thorughout the match, to earn a few rebounds which Sammy finished off with goals. Simone & Jodie chipped in with very timely intercepts to see us slowly edge in front and become Premiers by 2 goals at the siren!
Hearts were racing on court and off, as the girls won back to back premierships, and completed the clean sweep for the club.
Congratulatons to Lesley, Erin and Simone, for wonderful coaching thoughout the year.
Congratulations also to our Best on Court girls - Corrinne Tesselaar C Grade, Nicole Hajder B Grade and Sam Hansen A Grade.
Lets do it again in 2011, but no more games like the A Grade please!!
