This weekends matches at Seville all were excellent match ups and every game promised to be fiercely contested. Olinda came away with 4 wins from 5 matches which was a brilliant result.
NETBALL
B Team
The B team again had a very competitive game but came 6 goals short of taking away a win. A tough contest with both Olinda & Seville starting with a number of players out, and both losing players during the game to ankle injuries. This team will continue to improve each week, they are really starting to find their feet and becoming more of a team unit learning how to play together better each game. Georgia Taylor put in a stand out performance shooting 29 goals. Elise Tanzin took the court for her first game and for a new player did a great job shooting a handy 14 goals, the height she brings to the team will be a great assett.
All up a very good effort by all players and the scores of recent weeks show the increased competitiveness of the team - it won't be lomg till they notch up another win.
A Team
What a great win the team had on Saturday against Seville. Coming out strongly in the first quarter they set up the game to be in just front, the 1/2 time break saw the scores level but again a strong 3rd quarter had them going into the last with a handy lead of 8. It was fantastic to see the team take control of the game to set the pace and stop a surge by Seville in the last quearter, coming out well deserved winners by 9 goals. The attack was just brilliant with Nat Sloan and Samantha Royce combining effectively to get the ball to the goalers. Brooke Northey was outstanding in GS as was Lucy Allman in GA, a new combination of goalers these two are cementing their place in the team. A solid game by Bec Gray and Cassie Meadows in defence set up many turnovers for the attack to capitalise on.
Great game by a team that now is showing it's real potential.
FOOTBALL
U18s
Our wonderful Under 18 unit was put to the test on Saturday. Having kicked Seville into the game (3 goals 9 points) with some wayward goal kicking and lots of basic skill errors. This kept Seville’s hopes alive and to their credit they stuck at it all day.
The cream, as always, rose to the top and our boys stuck to the task at hand and in the end ran away with a comfortable win. Callum Eade and Luke Van Lierop were sensational on ball. Whilst Cal Beattie was as solid as a rock all day at CHB. Tom Lazdins gave us some good run and reliability at half back, but it was young Harry Cole who plays with us up from the under 16s, who stole the show. His explosive pace and hard running at, and through contests, was very exciting to watch. He is a real talent and one the senior club should do everything to keep at the club for a long time.
RESERVES
The Reserves side played some of their best football for the season when they stunned the highly fancied Seville side with 91 point belting. Again the mid field dominated with Russell Sloan, Andy Evans, Simon Leone, Frank Maskaant, James O’Reilly & Mick Scott taking complete control, with the forward line of Andy Greenall (7 goals), Adam Borg (4 goals), Tim Scott & Tim Wall taking full advantage of the advantages created. New recruit Brett Green was pretty much a unanimous choice as best on ground by many pundits in crowd, whilst most pleasing of all was the terrific form of young Christian Skudutis in the ruck.
Coach Shane ‘Keithy’ Collee had much praise for his boys but warned that next week’s game against top team Yarra Glen would be the real tester.
SENIORS
The seniors were up against 2nd placed Seville on the weekend and we new it would be a tough match. Seville had only lost 1 game and that was to us at home in round 1 so the boys were really keen to have another crack at them at the Seville ground which really has a distinctive slope.
The first quarter was a good one with both teams going hard at it. Seville had the advantage in the midfield and controlled the footy more. The backline with Day, O'Neill, MacDonald and Grogan were all outstanding under pressure, it was a great test for these guys and along with Ash Reid and Ben Telford, it is a pretty strong group.
The midfield had the hard word put on them at qtr time a responded well giving our forwards a real go and the likes of Azzam, Davis, Troutman and Irvin.
The second quarter saw us kick 6 goals to 2 and go in at the long break 4 goals up.
3rd quarter was another good quarter and although kicking 5 goals to 2, we had to work really hard. A couple of injuries slowed down the rotations and the boys were having to dig deep to stay ahead.Grogan, Azzam, Broomhall and Tregoning were leading the way and Glenn Stevens was dominant through the midfield.
The last quarter was all about just hanging in there and that we did with the game slowing down a couple of notches.
The backline were awesome all day and the whole team should be really happy with the result.
Olinda eventual winners by 48 points and best players were Glenn Stevens, Tregoning, Noorda, Davis, Day and Grogan.
