Olinda took the trek up to fire ravaged Kinglake on Saturday, and whilst the town is physically a shell of its former self, its spirit is well and truly alive !
NETBALL
A GRADE OLINDA FERNY CREEK 30 v KINGLAKE 29. A very tightly fought game from the start to the final whistle. At quarter time it was even, and this continued the entire game with the
goals coming one for one. A mini break of 4 goals to Olinda in the third quarter was clawed back by Kinglake with Olinda finally
winning by one goal, 29 to 30. Everyone on the team put in a fabulous effort playing extremely well and maintaining concentration and skills in an intense game. A fantastic team effort as this team continues to improve each week, hard to pick best from a game that saw every player putting in their all, was particulary pleasing to see the space created on court and on target passing.
Natalie Sloan starred in WA and was a key to the attack, Lucy Allman again played a very strong GA, and defenders Cassie Meadows & Fiona Mc Nair were magnificent.
Excellent game and a deserving win.
B GRADE
OLINDA FERNY CREEK 23 V KINGLAKE 37.
The devastation of the February 7 fires was brought home to the Olinda girls as we travelled up the blackened highways and saw the devastation first hand. The Kinglake Sporting Complex was surrounded by blackened trees and burnout buildings. It was an eerie feeling as we headed for Kinglake and possibly was a distraction.
With a late warm up and a frantic start Olinda took the court unprepared and unfocused. Kinglake took this to their advantage and got ahead quickly, with from the accurate shooting from their goaler attack. Although it was a good effort by the girls especially the defenders and a reasonable effort by the attackers and centre court players Kinglake stepped up and maintained the lead. A fantastic first game effort by Mary Taylor with having to play versatile positions.
Next week, Thornton Eildon : last years premiers will be a challenge with a few new aces up our sleeve should prove to be an interesting matchup.
FOOTBALL
U18S
OLINDA FERNY CREEK 164 V KINGLAKE 10.
In wet foggy conditions at Kinglake, the boys took a while to adapt and struggled a little to dominate as was expected of a top v bottom clash. Their was somegood displays of running in numbers, link up football. However most of the gamewas scrappy and allowed kinglake to save some face. Owen Raszkewicz was dominant once again, although bad kickingat goal ( 1 goal six) robbed him what would otherwise have been described as adominant game. Luke Van Lierop and 'Butters" also worked very hard on ball with some wonderfulruck work from Josh Wallis,Michael Ruigrokk, and Whoppa. Tom dawson finished well up forward with a handy 8 goals. Tom lazdins played a verycontrolling game up back, giving lots of run and drive from the half back line.
Over all a solid win but plenty of room for improvement.
RESERVES
OLINDA FERNY CREEK 76 V KINGLAKE 78.
SENIORS
OLINDA FERNY CREEK 159 V KINGLAKE 103.
A fantastic game vs kinglake at the Kinglake reserve. A really hard fought contest that saw neither team give any respite to the opposition. We came out of the blocks hard and got an early lead only to see Kinglake never give in a hang on to us for most of the day. Great effort from our 3 Under 18's players an especially Pat Rosier in his first hit out with 3 goals and Blake Walter with 5 and taking the key forward roll for most of the day.A great experience for both of these boys. Billy was great at CHF and agreat even contribution from the team. We ran out 56 point winners and the game highlighted a couple of areas where we can work on befor Thornton Eildon next week. Great to see the likes of Glen Stevens, James Reid, Mark Stevens, Sean Grogan, Steve Gannell and Ben O'Neill becoming more and more settled each week and a few of the more senior guys like Scott, Noords, Broomy and Gazza having more and more influence each week.
Get to training, spots are hard to come by.
Tuesday night at Kalorama to test out some bright lighting.
