The Footballers had some strong results whilst for the girls, the improvement continues but we remain winless across both teams
NETBALL :
A - Olinda 16 vs Powelltown 52.
The pouring rain and wind made for difficult conditions, by the end of the game inches of water on the court made it look more like a toddlers swimming pool. We expected a challenging game against Powelltown and it was. Our attack up the court worked well with Samantha Royce & Bec Gray teaming together beautifully, there was lots of space through the centre court with the team as a whole functioning much better and not crowding space. The scoreline doesn't really reflect the amount of play we had as a team, however we had difficulty getting the ball into the goalers against tight defense and were unable to capitilise fully on the goaling opportunities we did get. The defenders fought hard and Fiona Mc Nair did a great job in defense with Cassie Meadows picking up lots of the ball in wing defense. It was pleasing to see that even in slippery conditions our disposal was good and very few balls didn't stick in the hands of the receiver. Looking forward to next week when we play at home on our new court for the first time, and you can be sure there we will be a very determined team looking for it's first win this season.
B - Olinda 17 vs Powelltown 38.
Travelling to Powelltown in arctic conditions was possibly our biggest challenge for the season. This game was important for us to re-group after a disappointing effort against Yarra Glen. On a brand new netball court, the scene was set for us to perform at a level that would deliver good teamwork and a competitive effort. Unfortunately, it was difficult to execute good netball as the cold conditions did take their toll. Although we lost, there are some signs that we are improving. Our defence fought hard, but it was difficult to stop the goalers from Powelly.
Our talking does need to improve as does our goal shooting accuracy..maybe a tough call in cold & windy conditions, but Powelltown were much more accurate than us.
Emily our newest recruit played exceptionally well for her first game back working well with Kelli in the centre court area, followed by the defenders putting in a solid effort.
Our game next week against Belgrave, possibly in B grade, will be a good chance to get a win on the board!
FOOTBALL :
U18s - Olinda 130 vs Powelltown 14.
Another promising display from this exciting young group, swirly but dry conditions made for some ugly footy all round. The boys played well for four quaters, which was the main focus after dropping off in second half in the first two games. The mid field and half back line combined well running the ball up field and into the very safe hands of "goal machine" Blake Walter (10 goals).
Owen Raszkewicz and Callum Eade were dominant in the centre as was Patty Rosier, who coming back from a rib injury, was very impressive. The ruck work from all four ruckmen (Chrstian Skudutis, Michael Ruigrok, Josh Wallis and Brayden Shaw) was awesome, the best ive seen at the club !
Best Players- Owen Raszkewicz, Callum Eade, Blake Walter, Josh Wallis, Patty Rosier.
2nds - Olinda 106 vs Powelltown 7.
The reserves finally started to realise some of their real potential with a powerful 103 to 7 point win over Powelltown, despite very difficult windy & wet conditions. Best players included Paul Simmons in a welcome return to form, Adam Borg who is now showing some of his true abilities, & the old war horse Andy Greenall who kicked seven goals. Special mentions also to young guns, Christian Skudutis for a great display in the ruck & Tom Dawson for his work around the ground. Both had already played significant roles in the U/18 win in the previous game.
1sts - Olinda 104 vs Powelltown 39.
A tough afternoon for the Seniors with terrible conditions the order for the afternoon. The boys stuck to the task and the coaching panel would be well pleased with the effort over the day. Scores were tight at 1/4 time but from there, the boys worked hard to create chances whilst holding Powelltown to limited opportunities. George Azzam chipped in with another 4 goals. Sean Grogan, Dylan Troutman and Davey Noorda were in the best players.
The focus returns to Olinda this week where we host the Belgrave FNC. All teams in all grades look even in results and it promises to be a terrific day. We hope that the girls can get under way on the new netball court. Hopefully this can provide some inspiration to notch some wins.
