Olinda Fire Appeal Day Sunday February 15th
Great work from the cricket club in organizing what was a truly memorable day, albeit for a cause we would rather not have endured.
The challenge came from the cricket club to the footy boys to compete in a 20/20 match Sunday morning, before the final round Vets match (cricket) to establish if the local boys would win and play vets finals. During the morning, the Junior Footy Club had their registration morning, so a big crowd was
guaranteed.
With a cricket team containing only 2 regular cricketers, the bowling looked a little light, a situation which “Irish Rosie” and “Ton Up Wally” took special advantage of. Despite a 20 over score of 235, many thought the Golden Globe by “DT” the highlight of the innings. It’s fair to say no bowler stood out, although with Irish Rosie whacking the new and replacement ball into the Rhodie Gardens, the 3rd replacement ball was far from adequate.
The footballers took to the pitch with gusto. The Milo kids assisted significantly by moving marker cones in about 20 meters on the gate side, leading to numerous sixer’s falling just out of reach of fielders. Some challengeable umpiring decisions were also significant enabling the footballers, needing 16 off the last over, to get a single off the last to tie. There was such uproar, that many in the crowd thought the batsmen had not crossed for the single!!!
Highlights of the footy innings were Scotty Dog’s 75 with 6 sixer’s and the miraculous DT catch – it needs to be described with actions, but a equal to anything seen worldwide.
The Vets also managed to bring home an easy win. Chasing around 90 in 36 overs, Choco (our footy gatekeeper extraordinaire) retired at 40 with the score on 45. Opening partner Mark Robinson did not accelerate the scoring and remained not out on 14 at game end.
This gives
our vets a final and a premiership chance, so good luck guys.
All attending put a gold coin in the tin which was regularly rattled around the ground, raffle tickets – yes Dave Meadows won another raffle prize – and the footy club BBQ managed to raise close to $1800 for fire victims.
Special thanks to the OCC for giving the footy club an opportunity to join them in their fund raising effort – it clearly was great success.
