The following is a letter from Ngaire Broomhall, partner of Geoff "The Doc" Broomhall and mum of OFC star Nick Broomhall.
Last Saturday, I was honored to partake in the WorkSafe Country Netball League Game of the Month luncheon, which also incorporated the Pink Lady breast cancer theme.
Our netball girls must have felt very proud to have hosted this event at their club and I thank all those who made the Olinda Community Hall look fabulous, from the bright red cyclamen to the crisp white table cloths, it
all looked a treat. Our host for the formalities was Leigh Russell, Netball Victoria CEO, overseeing the presentation of many guest speakers including:
James Merlino, Minister of Sport, Recreation & Youth Affairs
Richelle McKenzie, Netball Victoria Board
Peter Hayne, OFCFNC President
Jackie Creswell, Breast Cancer Network Australia
Susan Allen, WorkSafe Victoria
I found Jackie Creswell, a breast cancer survivor, a most engaging person, whose story would have given everyone present a feeling of hope for women and their families, and sense of belonging to a larger network of committed people through Breast Cancer Network Australia and its supporters.
Susan Allen, WorkSafe Victoria, reminded us that it is important to take care of ourselves, inviting the audience to partake in the WorkSafe health check pavilions. Fifteen minute consultations provided some basic
investigations blood pressure, cholesterol, waistline circumference etc. As Mrs. Doc., I applaud those took the time to check their health.
Special guest speakers Sharelle McMahon, Co-captain Melbourne Vixens, and Ashlee Howard, rising star Melbourne Vixens, both gave most interesting insights about their netball at elite level, including training, highlights and even those low times of injuries, but in the face of all that, their determination to seize the day was not lost on the audience. Each has an incredible and impressive list of major achievements.
Rounding off the afternoon, the A grade netball match coin toss was made by our special guest Ashlee Howard, our girls playing against Warburton-Millgrove.
The most important message from this day was that not only has netball really come of age in regional areas, with numbers of players increasing each year, but also within OFCFNC, netball has become a such very large
component, enriching the footy aspects, and giving us a club that is family orientated, where women and children feel at home and safe, where we can cheer our netball & footy teams as a sporting family.
Thanks for a most successful great day,
Go Blooders!
Ngaire Broomhall
