Hi to all members and supporters,
The weekends action saw the "Mighty Blooders" host traditional rivals Monbulk up on the hill in classic "hills conditions". It was also the Annual Life Members and Past Presidents Day and all players were keen to impress !
In Netball action, we missed out on the points in all matches.
The C Graders had some player changes from the previous week and never really seemed to gel against a super determined Hawks outfit. Having said that, they were down by only a goal at 3/4 Qtr time and still in the hunt.
The girls came to a standstill in the last Qtr to be overrun 31-41. This sees them with a tentative hold on 3rd spot coming into this weeks Netball bye.
In B Grade, the girls were keen to show that the previous weeks effort against top side Mt.Evelyn was no fluke. They were pretty consistant for the whole match against the 2nd position Hawks and eventually went down with the very competitive scoreline of 31-54. This weeks break allows the girls to get ready for the big opportunity of beating Healesville the following week.
In A Grade action, we again came up against strong opposition in 3rd placed Monbulk. The girls had a real crack the previous week against the Mt.Evelyn "Dream Team" and were looking to back that up again. The Hawks had other ideas and were too strong over the day, eventually running out 58-26 winners. As Silvan don't have Netball sides this year, the girls have a week off before getting ready to fire up against the "Valley Bloods" in Healesville.
In football action, all grades were super competitive against three very good Monbulk outfits, with OFC taking the chocolates in 2 matches.
In the U18s, our win was set up with a hard working 1st half in tough conditions. Taking a 5 goal lead at halftime, the Monbulk side proved much stronger competition in the 2nd half, with both sides kicking 5 goals each. We ran out eventual winners 11.11.77 to 6.9.45 and keep top spot on the ladder.
In the Reserves, we took on the 3rd placed Hawks and were looking to continue our pretty consistant form of 2010. Up til 3/4 Qtr time, there was never more than 3 points in the contest at any break. In the last Qtr though, a couple of lapses in concentration saw us concede 3 goals to 1 to go down 6.8.44 to 9.2.56. This sees the Reserves drop to 6th spot with 6 wins and 4 losses. The 4 losses this year totalling 28 points in all.
In the Seniors, it was fair to say that this contest was the most anticipated Olinda/Monbulk match for quite a few years. Whilst Monbulk have gone from strength to strength in recent times, we haven't kept our end of the bargain and Saturday was the perfect opportunity to take some small steps to bringing back "the magic". We certainly got off to a fantastic start and held a 5 goal lead at halftime. Monbulk, true to form, came out in the 3rd term and slammed on 5 goals to our 1 to see us with a 1 goal lead at orange time. The Final Qtr was what local footy is all about. A genuine arm wrestle that saw the Hawks hit the front by a goal at the 20 minute mark. We drew level a couple of minutes later and then had most of the play inside forward 50 which saw 2 points scored. The play was bottled up for the last 3 minutes as we hung on for a memorable 9.13.67 to
9.11.65 victory. Our first over our rivals since 2001. We still sit in 6th spot, but we've drawn level with 5th placed Monbulk. We are 2pts behind 4th placed Mt.Evelyn and 1 win behind 3rd placed Upwey.
