A New Chapter for the Alexandra Football Netball Club
At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Alexandra Football Netball Club (AFNC), Ray Steyger officially stepped down as Club President, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary era. His decision was celebrated by a remarkable turnout of supporters, all eager to honor his significant achievements over three decades.
Ray’s presidency spanned an impressive 28 years, following his time as Vice President from 1995 to 1996. His leadership has been defined by steadfast advocacy for both football and netball, extending beyond our club to include ten years as President of the Seymour Junior League and eight years leading the Central Goulburn Football League. Under Ray’s guidance, junior players have thrived in a vibrant club atmosphere featuring six netball teams and five football teams, engaging over 200 children from our community.
Among his many contributions, Ray has been instrumental in securing grants that have substantially improved the AFNC’s facilities, including enhancements to the clubrooms and netball precinct. His efforts have not only driven growth within our teams but have also strengthened community bonds among players, supporters, and local residents.
Throughout his presidency, Ray has championed initiatives that emphasize skill development, sportsmanship, and inclusivity, ensuring every member, player, and volunteer feels appreciated. His dedication to community spirit is evident in his crucial role in organizing ANZAC Day events, which honor this important occasion and raise funds for the RSL. This annual tradition has become vital, with the RSL relying heavily on these contributions for its operations.
Ray also actively supports mental health initiatives, such as the Cool Heads program, collaborating with local police, CFA, and paramedics. He was also the inaugural recipient of the AFL Victoria CDS Vic Club of the Year award, successfully raising over $14,000 through the Container Deposit Scheme.
His iconic beard has become a beloved symbol throughout both the competition and the community!
This transition has been thoughtfully planned over several years, paving the way for positive change within the club. As we welcome incoming President Kylie Cairns, we honor the legacy Ray has built and look forward to an exciting future ahead
