Two home games in a row, last week we hosted Wonthaggi in what was a well attended day, and this week we host the Warragul Football Netball Club. The winter has hit and the ground surface deteriorated as the day went on, but held up remarkably well for the amount of rain we had, particularly on the night before the match. It will struggle to hold up too well for a second consecutive game if it has rained to much this week. Having said that, both sides play on the same surface and the Wonthaggi seniors and reserves again showed us that they are quality football teams and deserving of their places inside the top five.
A highlight of the day was watching the young Auskick kids play on the wing in front of the grandstand at half time of the senior match. The muddier the better for these kids who had a great time playing under the lights. Well done to Marshall and his team of helpers and to all the kids who took part. The under 14s enjoyed their day shadowing the senior team and their chance to sit in the rooms and be addressed by the senior coach. Well done to Rohan and Glenn in putting the idea into action. Unfortunately the weather did not allow for the jumping castle, on safety grounds but there were a lot of kids sporting Parrot and Power decorated faces, thanks to Karen and the wonderful job she did. It just shows how many people work so hard in so many ways for the club to give the youth of Leongatha and District the chance to play footy and netball and be involved in a family friendly environment.
Football. The seniors matched it for three quarters but were blown away in the third term. Tom Marriott showed he can play in any conditions with his strength a feature. Captain Chris Verboon kicked two of our three goals while Chris Bruns and Zac Vernon once again featured very high in talent and intensity. With numerous senior players out injured, the reserves were undermanned and outplayed from start to finish by an impressive Wonthaggi team. The under 18s put up a great contest and the club remains proud of the boys who have committed to each other and are sticking together through a difficult season. Wonthaggi is having similar issues to us in attracting junior players and our under 16s played some very impressive football on the way to a good win. The sooner some hard decisions are made about the structure of football in Gippsland the better it will be for Gippsland football in general. Awards:- Seniors: Bairs Hotel – Ben Willis. Netball. A Grade kept their finals hopes alive with another good win against a higher placed side. Unfortunately Drouin made it a bit harder for us by playing a draw with Sale, which leaves us still two games outside the five with only five games remaining. We can only try and keep winning and hope a couple of results go our way, as we have shown we are as good as any in the league when we get our best team on the court. Both B grade and C grade showed they are handy sides, both losing by only narrow margins. The under 17s have provided yet another exciting drawn match, their 3rd for the year and the 6th for the year for the club. Well done on never giving in girls. Wonthaggi’s junior netball, in contrast to their junior football, is quite strong at the moment and they had big wins over the young Parrots in the U13 & U15s. Awards:- A Grade: RSL – Laura Higgins.
