Last Saturday we travelled to Maffra, which has been a difficult assignment in recent years, and was no different this time around. The netballers came home with a nail biting win in A grade and a more comfortable win in B grade. The footy came home empty handed. We were fortunate to escape the winter blast that was occurring in South Gippsland and apart from a chilly breeze off the mountains, the weather was pleasant and the Maffra ground, although a bit soft in patches, was quite a good surface for all the rain they have had.
Football. If Maffra thought ladder positions meant they were in for a cruise in the Seniors, they soon realized they were wrong. The Leongatha team played a disciplined defensive game and Maffra couldn’t get their running game going. Leongatha held slight leads at the first two breaks. On the ¾ time siren Nick Nagel had a long shot for his fifth goal, working the ball well with the wind, but just missing. A goal would have given Leongatha the lead going into the last term. Nick’s form this year has been great. Maffra held us up and kicked 3 of their own in the last term, which made it appear to be a more comfortable win than it was in reality. The performances of Chris Bruns and Zac Vernon were again outstanding, both also continuing on their great form. The reserves were outclassed by Maffra, but there were some great efforts and commitment, especially by two of the bigger blokes, Rick O’Loughlin and Chris Rump. The under 18s were forced to forfeit the match, which is not good for the boys or the club. The under 16s also went down to the strong Maffra line up, but Maffra didn’t get it as easy as they may have expected. Good effort again lads. The committee is looking at what can be done to persuade local lads to get involved in the higher standard. The club has created, and this week advertised, a position for a Football Recruitment Officer, whose duties will include co-ordinating the development of our junior teams. Netball. Again the even nature of the league was on show, with all bar one of the A grade games having single figure winning margins. Leongatha was the closest with a 2 goal victory from a fast finishing Maffra side. The B grade had it a bit easier but Maffra tested us throughout the game. C grade went close but the junior teams all came up against top five sides and couldn’t match it with them on the day. Awards:- A Grade: South Gippsland Therapy Centre – Sarah McCahon. Leongatha RSL – Laura Higgins. B Grade: Rusty Windmill – Nicola Marriot. Darcy’s – Lisa Clark. C Grade: Darcy’s – Amelia McCarthy. Buzz hair – Abby Bolge. This week A night game against our South Gippsland rivals in Wonthaggi Power. Wonthaggi gave us a touch up earlier in the year, but we have adapted to the structures and style that Glenn has implemented and we are expecting to produce a different effort under the lights. The reserves still feel they should have won at Wonthaggi and will also be out to reverse the result. The under 18s have some players back this week and should field a side strong enough to challenge for their first win, and the under 16s are also eager to display some skills without the early morning dew they are accustomed to. Hopefully the rain holds off. A grade is probably the only team left at the club with a chance to feature in the finals and cannot afford to drop this game against 6th placed Wonthaggi. Watch out for the Auskick kids at half time of the footy.
