This week we will start on the big positive of last weekend, and that was the ground surface. It was close to perfect apart from the cricket pitch being a bit sticky, but even it was not too bad. To Danny Hickey and all your helpers (sorry not to attempt to name you all) and to all the people and sponsors who put in so much time, effort and money to install the drainage – well done. I will admit we were somewhat blessed with a dry Friday and Saturday after so much rain during the week. It does demonstrate what can be achieved by a dedicated group of volunteers, when our ground was in better condition than the big money surfaces we have played on recently.
Football. The top surface was one thing, but the wind was another and it was going to take different styles of footy depending on which end we were kicking to. The seniors’ defensive effort was impressive in the 1st term kicking against a howling wind. Holding Sale to 3 goals, even though not scoring ourselves, could have been appreciated as a win for the term. Unfortunately in the 2nd term we didn’t work hard or smart enough when in possession, which Sale definitely managed to do in the 3rd term. Although a little late, we showed a bit of urgency and intent in the last term outscoring the ladder leaders 4 goals to 2. We will need to take this discipline and effort into the game today if we are to be competitive against an in form Maffra side. Best. Bairs Hotel – Zac Vernon in one of his finest games for the club. Deb Watchorn Sports Massage – Chris Bruns. McCartins Hotel – Tom Marriott. Spokes Fresh Meat and Fish- Nick Tuckett. Ashley Lynch and Nathan Lynch. The Reserves had a very different line up to when Pistol played his 300th, but still played a mighty game doubling Sale’s score. McCartins Hotel – Matthew Grylls, Darcy’s Wine Bar – Lochie Dumont. Evans Petroleum – Sam Embry. Marriotts MPE – Grant Fleming. Nick Phelan and Jack Ginnane. The under 18s and under 16s week after week don’t give in to the stronger sides and show their character in fighting each game out, playing in the higher level of competition that some of their mates won’t have a go at. Under 18s Best. Leongatha Health Foods – Jack Ginnane. Corals Fish n Chips – Blake Moscript. Baker’s Delight – Matt Borschmann. Hair Bairs – Michael Olden. McDonalds – Anthony Argento. Trent Jones. Under 16s. Best. President’s Award – Nathan Trotto. Canteen Award – Harrison McGannon. McDonalds – Tim Sauvarin and Luis Riseley. CSC Snack Bar – Brock Jones. Anthony Argento. Unfortuately some people from a certain Alberton League Club have very short memories, and seem to have forgotten how the LJFC propped up their juniors some years back, and could not find it in their heart to return the favour last week when they had the week off. Thanks go to their players who were willing to have a go, only to be not permitted by some at their club. The decision was in stark contrast to the gesture from Korumburra FNC, earlier in the year, who incidentaly did not owe us anything but still allowed some of their players to wear the green and gold for one week when Korumburra had the bye.
Netball. A grade again showed that although 8th on the ladder, the Gippsland League is the only league to play in if you want a consistent weekly hit out against quality opposition. It was 2nd v 8th with our coach and our last year’s B&F both out, but we pushed Sale right to the end going down by only 5 goals in an exceptionally high quality match. It shows how even the league is when the side 8th on the ladder has thrown the second most goals in the league. Awards. South Gippsland Therapy – Kasie Rump. (The old girl might need a good massage after a great game). Rusty Windmill – Kate Sperling. B Grade also went down by just 5 goals in a tight game. Rusty Windmill – Andrea Lynch. Buzz Hair – Nicola Marriott. C Grade went down by 10 against one of the top sides. Darcy’s Wine Bar - Carlie McNamara. Rusty Windmill – Melinda McLennan. Under 17s. Rusty Windmill - Kath Harms. South Gippsland Therapy Centre – Elise Dowling. Under 15s. Excessorise – Chloe Hogg. Network Video – Sara Riseley. The under 13s pride themselves in heart stopping close games, winning this one by 3 goals. Nagels Pharmacy – Luca Riseley. Sports First – Simone Dekker.
The day was followed by a Back to School social event which going by social media content, was very much enjoyed by the netballers.
Auction Players. Zac Vernon, Nick Phelan, Kate McCarthy, Nicola Marriott and Melinda McLennan.
This week we travel to Maffra, rescheduled as a day game with all footy and netball starting at the normal times. The footy will have it all in front of them with Maffra in the top 5 in all grades, however there is no reason a couple of upsets can’t be pulled off. The ladders indicate some fairly even games for our senior netball sides with the juniors all hoping to get up as the underdogs.
Wonthaggi Night Game. Hopefully the rain and cold will hold off for a great day and evening of footy and netball next Saturday. We will have a jumping castle for the younger kids, face painting, Auskick grid games at half time of the Seniors and the under 14 footballers will shadow the seniors during their warm up and breaks.
Social Club. Get your table or tickets for the main fundraising event, the annual Goods and Services Auction on 19th July. The Comedy night is on 9th August. Then make sure your act is coming together for the players review after the Moe game on 16th August.
A reminder that if you are not into Facebook, you can easily stay in touch with club news and events on the LFNC Team App or on the Website.
