The last of our three away games in succession was the longest road trip of the season, to Bairnsdale. The high standard of the league was again on display and unfortunately showed we still have some work to do in order to match it with the stronger clubs. It must be said that it is not through lack of effort that we are not there yet, and all at the club are working hard towards continued improvement both on and off the footy and netball fields. Congratulations to Bairnsdale on the work they have done to build their club’s strength right across the board since their return to the league. It confirms their decision to return to the higher level of competition.
Netball. We will start with netball as our A grade girls came home with a great win against a top five side. We went into the game without last year’s B&F, Claire Fitzgerald. Necessity can sometimes reveal versatility, as Ali Rock moved to GD and played a blinder. The girls teamed well all over the court with the win setting up a chance at playing finals in a very strong and even comp in which every team except Maffra is still a chance to play finals. This week against Sale is another must win game. B grade pushed Bairnsdale and C Grade kept the run of exciting drawn games going. Bairnsdale won all the juniors, but our U13s again pushed them all the way. Awards. U13s: L.C. Excessorise – Taylor Brown. Baker’s Delight – Amelia Riseley. U 15s: Network Video – Brooke Materia. Baker’s Delight – Macey Davidson. U17s: Nagel’s Pharmacy – Jess Clark. Baker’s Delight – Kath Harms. C Grade: Rusty Windmill – Carlie McNamara. Darcy’s – Elise Dowling. B Grade. Sports First – Jess Clark. Rusty Windmill – Rebekah Vagg. A Grade. Rusty Windmill – Ali Rock. RSL – Kate McCarthy. Rumours are surfacing that Kate McCarthy is being considered for the Vixens squad, well at least their after game social side anyway.
Football. To say the footballers didn’t have the best day would be an understatement, the seniors going into the game with a number of players missing through injury. Having said that, both sides fielded 18 players each and we were given a lesson by the strong Bairnsdale team. It was Bairnsdale from start to finish under the lights, and our lads will need to regroup to take on Sale, the current ladder leaders. Mitch Dennison became the latest of our juniors to make his debut in the senior side. Congratulations Mitch. There were no reserves due to Bairnsdale’s unique structure. Our under 16s and under 18s keep coming up against some extremely strong and talented teams from the bigger towns, but they continue to give it their best and do themselves and their families proud. The commitment of the boys and their coaching teams is commendable. Awards. U16s: President’s Award – Jake Rockall. Hair Bairs – Harrison McGannon. CSC Snack Bar – Luis Riseley. McDonalds – Jack Ballagh. U18s: Corals Fish N Chips – Blake Moscript. Bakers Delight – Matt Borschman. McDonalds – Mike Olden and Jordan Nagel. Fraser Kelly, Jack Ginnane. Seniors: Bairs Hotel – Zac Vernon. Evans Petroleum – Luke Castagna. Spokes Fresh Meat & Fish – Chris Bruns. Joel Renden, Tom Marriott and Mitch Dennison.
Auction Players. Ben Willis, Kate McCarthy, Nikola Marriott and Aimee O’Loughlin. The ladies committee syndicate is cleaning up this year with another 3 winners this week.
This week we welcome Sale FNC to Leongatha for our first home game for a month. All the hard work that has been put into the ground surface will be tested, with a large amount of rain forecast for the week. The improved ground surface is another example of the excellent work being done by volunteers around the club, but they can only do so much on limited budgets so hopefully the surface holds up.
Social Club. Tonight is The Back to School night at the social rooms with steak and chicken schnitzels on the menu after the game. Other events: Get your table or tickets for the main fundraising event, the annual Goods and Services Auction on 19th July. The Comedy night is on 9th August. Then make sure your act is coming together for the players review after Moe game on 16th August.
A reminder that if you are not into Facebook, you can easily stay in touch with club news and events on the LFNC Team App.
Thursday evening meals. Thursday night is really going well, serving over 130 meals 3 weeks in a row. And the open fire is getting better use each week.
Victory Through harmony.
